Offer Description

i3s – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (hereinafter i3) is opening a call to award a grant for the development of R&D activities by Master ́s enrolled in non-academic degree courses integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, within the project “Genomic and phenotypic traits contributing to persistence of Listeria monocytogenes in food processing environment”, ref. PTDC/BAA-AGR/4194/2021, financed by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P/MCTES, PIDDAC .

Host Institution: i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, Porto, Portugal.

Scientific Area: Biology.

Project Title: “Genomic and phenotypic traits contributing to persistence of Listeria monocytogenes in food processing environment”.

Workplan:

The overall objective of the project is to improve food safety and decrease food waste reducing food contamination by Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria is one of the most feared foodborne pathogens being the most frequent cause of death due to contaminated food in Europe. The ubiquitous nature and ability to grow in harsh conditions (including refrigeration temperatures, high salt concentration and low pH values) makes this pathogen difficult to control by the food industry. Some strains are persistent, representing a major challenge for de food sector. Although it is accepted that particular traits contribute to persistence, these traits remain obscure. However, understanding mechanisms contributing to persistence is essential for planning preventive measures. The project will compare persistent and sporadic strains regarding their full genome and their tolerance to hurdles frequently encountered in the food chain and that may confer an advantage to persist

In this part of the project, we aim at testing selected persistent and sporadic Listeria strains for their capacity to form biofilms, express major virulence factors and infect cultured cells.

Admission Requirements:
