Offer Description

i3s – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (hereinafter called i3S) is opening a call to award a grant for the development of R&D activities by doctoral students, enrolled in doctoral programs, or by Master´s enrolled in non-academic degree courses integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution within the project “Angiogenesis in silico: from numerical simulation to tissue engineering application”, refª PTDC/EME-APL/3058/2021 , financed by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P/MCTES, PIDDAC.

Host Institution: i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, Porto, Portugal.

Scientific Area: Biomedical Engineering/Biomaterials.

Project Title: “Angiogenesis in silico: from numerical simulation to tissue engineering application”.

Workplans: One of the main concerns in Western societies in the areas of health and economy is the occurrence of wounds, due to their high frequency and cost of treatment. Chronic wounds in which the healing process does not take place properly and takes substantially time to heal is one the main concern for these patients. Engineered tissues of clinically relevant size and capable of being used in the treatment of chronic wounds require a functional vascular network. This network is formed due to angiogenesis, the process of forming new blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature. This process is essential to allow the delivery of oxygen and nutrients and remove waste from metabolism, ensuring cell viability and inosculation to the patient's vasculature after implantation. In the literature there are some studies regarding the tissue engineering design and application, however, vascularization remains one of the most important challenges in this field. New solutions are needed to develop the next generation of scaffolds that drive true angiogenesis process. Angiogenesis is regulated by oxygen levels, growth factor gradients and mechanical stimuli. However, less is known about the mechanical stimuli in angiogenesis process. Project aims to analyses the capacity of physical, biological and mechanical stimuli to promote angiogenesis concerning extrinsic and intrinsic stresses fields under static and dynamic in vitro co-culture of human adult cells within engineered biomaterials.

Admission Requirements:

Mandatory:

- We are looking for a candidate holding a Bachelor’s in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering or similar areas and Master degree in Biomedical Engineering or similar courses.

- Be enrolled in a PhD Program or an honour statement of capacity to enrol in the aforementioned cycle of studies until the grant is contracted, preferably in Biomedical Engineering; Or:

 - Candidates must be enrolled in a non-academic degree course integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, or an honour statement of capacity to enrol in the aforementioned course until the grant is contracted.

- Candidates must present theoretical and practical experience in the field of Biomaterials, in particular with experience in cell cultures under static and dynamical conditions.

Preferential:

  • Have experience into microfluidic systems and bioreactors, biochemistry techniques and molecular biology;
  • Have experience in fluorescence microscopy;
  • Candidates fluent in written and spoken English;
  • Good capacity to work in a team;
  • Knowing how to plan and organize scientific experiments in a satisfactory way.

Legislation and other applicable regulations: Research Fellowship Holder Statute enacted by Law no. 40/2004 of August 18th, as amended; FCT Research Grants Regulation, approved by way of Regulation nr. 950/2019, published in the II Series of DR of December 16th, 2019; i3S Research Grants Regulation.

Place: The research activities will be hosted at i3S, under the scientific coordination of Dr. Christiane Salgado.

Length time: The duration of the fellowship is 6 months. The expected starting date is July 1st of 2024, upon availability of the financed funds.

Monthly maintenance stipend: €1.259,64; according to the values table of FCT, at Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_atualizacao-2024.pdf ). The payments will be made by bank transference.

Research grants may also include other components, as the voluntary social insurance, under the terms of the Research Fellowship Holder Statute, article 10.

Evaluation Criteria: Candidates will be ranked by curricular evaluation and with the aim of obtaining clarification and additional information on the curriculum elements presented, the best 3 candidates should be subject to an interview. The curricular evaluation will consider the admission requirements: 50% for the training (grade and area of the Degree or other degrees), 40% for the laboratory experience and the letter of motivation, the interview will weigh 10%.

Evaluation Panel: President – Christiane Salgado; member - Cristina Barrias; member - Ana Guerra: Substitute member - Sílvia Bidarra and Sílvia Ferreira;

Information and Publicity of Funding Granted: The results of the evaluation will be notified by email to all candidates. After notification, candidates have 10 working days to comment and, within that period, a complaint may be submitted by email to [email protected] .

Applications: The call will be open between May 7th , 2024 and May 31th , 2024. The applications must be submitted electronically at:
