i3s – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (hereinafter i3) is opening a call to award a grant for the development of R&D activities by doctoral students, enrolled in doctoral programs, within the project “IBEROSmais - Instituto de Biofabricación en Red para El Envejecimiento Saludable”, Ref. 0072_IBEROS_MAIS_1_E, financed by the program Interreg VI A España – Portugal (POCTEP) 2021-2027.

Host Institution: i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, Porto, Portugal.

Scientific Area: Biofabrication.

Project Title: “IBEROSmais - Instituto de Biofabricación en Red para El Envejecimiento Saludable”.

Workplan: The work plan includes the development of 3D models, organoids or chip models involving biofabrication techniques and analysis of the cellular response in these models. The candidate will have to actively participate in scientific dissemination activities related to the project theme.

Admission Requirements:

Mandatory:

- We are looking for a candidate holding a Master's degree (or Integrated Master's degree) in Bioengineering, Biomaterials, Biomedical Engineering or related areas, with an average equal to or greater than 16 (in the case of a master's degree without being integrated, the average bachelor’s degree + master's degree will be considered).

- Be enrolled in a PhD Program preferably in biomedical engineering or bioengineering or biotechnology or related fields, or an honour statement of capacity to enrol in the aforementioned cycle of studies until the grant is contracted;

Preferencial: Experience and solid knowledge in the following points:

- Manufacture of 3D models, organoids or chip models and analysis of the cellular response in these models;

- Isolation and 3D culture of tissue-derived human cells;

- International experience;

- Writing scientific articles;

- Oral or poster communications at international congresses;

The candidate must demonstrate interest in the development of 3D models using biofabrication techniques and in scientific dissemination activities for the community and general public. The candidate must also be able to establish international collaborations, particularly within the scope of the Iberian network established in the project.

Legislation and other applicable regulations: Research Fellowship Holder Statute enacted by Law no. 40/2004 of August 18th, as amended; FCT Research Grants Regulation, approved by way of Regulation nr. 950/2019, published in the II Series of DR of December 16th, 2019; i3S Research Grants Regulation.

Place: The research activities will be hosted at i3S, under the scientific coordination of Professor Professor Pedro Granja and Professor Raquel Gonçalves.

Length time: The duration of the fellowship is 6 months, eventually renewable until the maximum of 18 months. The expected starting date is March, 16th of 2024, upon availability of the financed funds.

Monthly maintenance stipend: €1.199,64; according to the values table of FCT, at Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_2023.pdf ). The payments will be made by bank transference.

Research grants may also include other components, as the voluntary social insurance, under the terms of the Research Fellowship Holder Statute, article 10.

Evaluation Criteria: Selection will be made by curriculum evaluation (40%), previous experience in the points described in the Admission Requirements (50%), and motivation letter (10%). An assessment will be made (on a scale of 1 to 100), followed by a ranking of candidates based on the score obtained in the criteria defined above. If necessary, candidates with a score greater than 75 points may be selected for interview. In this case, the final evaluation will be: curriculum evaluation (40%), previous experience (45%), motivation letter (5%), interview (10%).

Information and Publicity of Funding Granted: The results of the evaluation will be notified by email to all candidates. After notification, candidates have 10 working days to comment and, within that period, a complaint may be submitted by email to [email protected] .
