i3s – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (hereinafter i3) is opening a call to award a grant for the development of R&D activities by Master ́s enrolled in non-academic degree courses integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, within the project “Uncovering biomechanical drivers in skin fibrosis to engineer a novel biomimetic 3D tissue model”, ref. 2022.06048.PTDC, financed by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P.

 

Host Institution: i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, Porto, Portugal.

 

Scientific Area: Bioengineering.

 

Project Title: “Uncovering biomechanical drivers in skin fibrosis to engineer a novel biomimetic 3D tissue model”.

 

Workplan:

The work plan will be focused on the 3D bioprinting of skin models through the deposition of cell-laden biomaterials. The candidate will perform the following activities:

- Design, synthesis and preparation of hydrogels for 3D bioprinting;

- Characterization of chemical, rheological and mechanical properties of hydrogels and biological skin samples;

- 3D bioprinting of cell-laden hydrogels;

- Analysis of bioprinted tissues using microscopy and molecular biology analysis techniques. 

 

Admission Requirements:

Mandatory:

- Candidate holding a Master Degree or equivalent on Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering or related areas, with minimal classification of 15 (0-20), for the integrated MSc or the average between BSc and MSc.

- Be enrolled in a non-academic degree course integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, or an honor statement of capacity to enroll in the aforementioned course until the grant is contracted;

- Proven experience in hydrogel synthesis and 3D bioprinting of skin models;

- Author/co-author of at least 1 scientific publication in 3D bioprinting.

 

Preferencial:

- Author/co-author of scientific publications in the fields of biomaterials and skin tissue engineering;

- Participation in research projects in the field of Bioengineering;

- Experience in confocal microscopy;

- Fluent in spoken and written English.

 

Legislation and other applicable regulations: Research Fellowship Holder Statute enacted by Law no. 40/2004 of August 18th, as amended; FCT Research Grants Regulation, approved by way of Regulation nr. 950/2019, published in the II Series of DR of December 16th, 2019; i3S Research Grants Regulation.

 

Place: The research activities will be hosted at i3S, under the scientific coordination of Doctor Rúben Pereira.

 

Length time: The duration of the fellowship is 12 months, and the expected starting date is April 16th , 2024, upon availability of the financed funds.

 

Monthly maintenance stipend: €1.259,64, according to the values table of FCT, at Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_atualizacao-2024.pdf ). The payments will be made by bank transference.

Research grants may also include other components, as the voluntary social insurance, under the terms of the Research Fellowship Holder Statute, article 10.

 

Evaluation Criteria: The evaluation criteria are based on the scientific and curricular path as specified bellow:

Stage 1: Curricular evaluation (total score 100%)

- Detailed CV (40%)

- Research experience with relevance for the project work plan (50%)

- Motivation letter (10%)

 

Stage 2: Interview (total score 100%)

- Curricular evaluation (70%)

- Interview (30%)

Up to 3 candidates with higher classification, in Stage 1, will be invited for interview. The final classification system for candidates is expressed on a scale from 0 to 100.
