i3s – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (hereinafter i3) is opening a call to award a grant for the development of R&D activities by Master´s enrolled in non-academic degree courses integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, within the project “Biofilm genetic regulation in the treatment of Chronic Wound Infection”, ref. - 2022.04739.PTDC, financed by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P.

Host Institution: i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, Porto, Portugal.

Scientific Area: Microbiology; Molecular biology; Bioengineering.

Project Title: “Biofilm genetic regulation in the treatment of Chronic Wound Infection”.

Workplan:

• Determination of the efficiency of gene expression modulators in bacteria;
• Determination of the antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity of the selected molecules;
• Development of a hydrogel responsive to the wound environment.

Admission Requirements:

Mandatory:

We are looking for a candidate holding a Master degree in Bioengineering, Microbiology, Biology, Biochemistry, or related fields with a minimum grade of 15/20. Candidates must also be enrolled in a non-academic degree course integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, at the time of the start of the contract. Domain of English, spoken and written and immediate availability to start the contract.

Preferential: Experience in the following areas:

• Molecular biology techniques, namely: PCR, RT-PCR, SDS-PAGE, Western Blot;

• Culture of microorganisms;

• Antimicrobial activity assays and biofilm assays;

• Production and characterization of hydrogels.

Legislation and other applicable regulations: Research Fellowship Holder Statute enacted by Law no. 40/2004 of August 18th, as amended; FCT Research Grants Regulation, approved by way of Regulation nr. 950/2019, published in the II Series of DR of December 16th, 2019; i3S Research Grants Regulation.

Place: The research activites will be hosted at i3S, under the scientific coordination of Doctor Cláudia Monteiro.

Length time: The duration of the fellowship is 12 months, eventually renewable, and the expected starting date is july, 2023, upon availability of the financed funds.

Monthly maintenance stipend: €1.199,64, according to the values table of FCT, at Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_2023.pdf ). The payments  will be made by bank transference.

Research grants may also include other components, as the voluntary social insurance, under the terms of the Research Fellowship Holder Statute, article 10.

Evaluation Criteria: The selection will be made by Curriculum Assessment (CV) (50%), considering the previous experience in the points described in the admission requirements and letter of motivation (20%). The best ranked candidates based on their CV and motivation letter will be called for an interview (30%). An evaluation will be made (on a scale of 1 to 100), followed by a ranking of candidates based on the score obtained in the criteria defined above.

Information and Publicity of Funding Granted: The results of the evaluation will be notified by email to all candidates. After notification, candidates have 10 working days to comment and, within that period, a complaint may be submitted by email to rh@i3s.up.pt .
