Open Call for a Research Fellowship for Master Degree – BI M, in the Project

UID/Multi/04555 to Genomics Unit

The Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) is welcoming applications for a research fellowship for

a master position under the Genomics Unit, financed by national funds through FCT/MCTES

(PIDDAC) under the project UIDP/04555/2020 with the following conditions:

1. Duration The fellowship duration according to the IGC Research Fellowship Regulation

approved by FCT (https://gulbenkian.pt/ciencia/wp-content/uploads/sites/47/2022/06/2021-

Regulamento-de-Bolsas-IGC.pdf) is 12 months. The fellowship contract is expected to start by

September 2022, under the exclusiveness regime as required by Research Fellowship Regulation

of Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, IP (FCT).

2. Subject of Activities: The successful candidate will execute the following activities: NGS

DNA/RNA libraries preparation (sample handling, processing, quantification, sequencing) and

Next Generation Sequencing services the Unit provides. This will include workflow management,

bench work as well as raw data processing.

3. Scientific Guidance The selected candidate will join the Genomics Unit of the R&D Unit

(https://gulbenkian.pt/ciencia/genomics/ ) headed by Dr. Ricardo Leite.

4. Academic Profile and Admission Requirements: Master’s degree in biology,

Biochemistry, or equivalent.

We are looking for a highly motivated person, passionate by science and technology, eager to

learn and to solve problems, with personal competences to work in a service-based

environment, with good inter-personal skills and high degree of initiative.

Additionally, we will prefer candidates with:

i) experience in Molecular Biology, in particular in DNA and RNA techniques, is required;

ii) experience in Next Generation Sequencing (Illumina, and/or Oxford Nanopore), RTqPCR

and NGS sample processing and raw data analysis;

iii) experience with the Single cell RNA-Seq, Fragment Analyzer, Tapestation.

iv) Capacity to work both independently and as a part of a team are required.

v) Good communication skills, including a good level of spoken English, which would

enable a good communication and work in an international setting, are necessary.

vi) High commitment and a collaborative attitude are needed for this job.

vii) Troubleshooting capacity and attention to detail are extremely important.

According to article 3, point 2 of IGC Research Fellowship Regulation, the selected candidate, at

the time of application, will have to be enrolled in a course not awarding an academic degree

integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution.

If the qualification has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution it must be

recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, under the terms of the provisions of

article 25.º of Decree-Law n.º 66/2018, of August 16th, which approves the legal regime of

recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of Higher Education, attributed by foreign higher

education institutions, and of paragraph e) of n.º 2 of article 4.º of Decree-Law n.º 60/2018, of

August 3rd, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the date of the hiring

act. The jury reserves the right to invite the candidate ranked immediately after to the position

in question when the first ranked candidate is not recognized with the academic degree after

the aforementioned formalities have been fulfilled.

5. For Portuguese taxpayers: All candidates that where/are currently taxpayers in Portugal

are required to present evidence of the fulfillment of their individual obligations towards the

Portuguese Tax Authority and Social Security. Failure to comply with this requirement will be

considered as a criteria for exclusion from the recruitment process.

6. Applicable legislation and Regulation: All candidates must comply with the IGC

Research Fellowship Regulation; Research Fellowship Statutes amended by Decree nº 123/2019

of August 28th; FCT Legislation and Regulations for Fellowships and the Decree-Law n.º 66/2018,

of August 16th (Legal regime for recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of higher

education awarded by foreign higher education institutions)

7. Subsidy Month Stipend: 1.144,64€/month according to the table of monthly

maintenance allowance amounts set out in Annex I of IGC Research Fellowship Regulation. The

payment will be made by bank transfer. The selected candidate will benefit from a

comprehensive health insurance policy (applicable to all scholarship contracts over 6 months)

and may also be reimbursed for the amount corresponding to the Voluntary Social Security

contribution. Any of these plans are dependent on voluntary membership.

8. Deadline for applications and how to submit applications: Interested candidates

should send their applications to [email protected] in a single PDF file, named “Applicant

name_UG_UID_BI”, containing: Motivation Letter (1 page max); Curriculum Vitae (2 pages max)

and contacts of two references, stating whether these could be approached. After a pre-analysis

of applications, selected candidates will be invited for an interview.

9. Methods of Selection and Evaluation: The selection procedure shall be as follows:

Curriculum (60%), reference letters (15%), motivation letter (15%) and interview, if considered

necessary by the jury, of the selected candidates (10%).

10. Jury Selection: Chairman: Dr. Ricardo Leite. Other members: Dr. Jorge Carvalho and Dr.

Leonor Ruivo. Substitute member: Dr. Marta Monteiro.

11. Form of Advertising / Notification of results: The assessment results will be sent to all

candidates and to the FCT by email. There will be 10 working days for complaints/appeals after

the date of publication of the Selection Minute, through the same application email.

12. Application Period: From 01.08.22 until 12.08.22
