Offer Description

A Research Fellowship (BI) (Reference REQUIMTE 2024-08) on the project BeTASTy – “New Molecular and Cell-based Approaches to assess Food Astringency and Bitterness” Grant Agreement 101040462 ERC-2021-STG, supported by European funds by European Research Council, is available at REQUIMTE.

Main research field: Chemistry

Admission requirements: Master's degree in Biochemistry or related fields (grade equal or higher than 16 values) and enrollment in a doctoral program or enrollment/attendance of a non-degree course taught by a higher education institution in conjunction with an R&D unit in Chemistry or related areas. Experience in cell culture and phenolic compounds analysis are mandatory.

In case the Master degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 341/2007 of October 12th, and all formalities established therein must be complied with at the signature of Fellowship contract.

Working plan: Research on food taste has increasingly highlighted the impact of taste on survival, nutrition and, more recently, health and well-being. In food science research, the study of taste perception is gaining importance as a tool to address the epidemic of nutritionally poor and unhealthy diets. Shifting the population to healthier diets is of utmost importance and a pillar of public health and well-being. In this context, plant-based diets are at the center of research because they are naturally healthy but not always appealing and tasty. Bitter taste and astringency are two organoleptic properties commonly perceived when eating plant-based foods and derived products, and, when perceived in excess, can lead to rejection of food. Thus, the work planned in this project aims to understand the molecular phenomena that trigger the perception of astringency and perceive the possible explanation between the two referred sensory properties.

Applicable Legislation: Law nº.40/2004, 18th August (Research Fellow Statute) amended and republished by Decreto-Lei n.º 123/2019, 28th August; FCT Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships (https://former.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamentos.phtml.pt ).

Work Place: The work will be conducted at Departamento de Química e Bioquímica, under the supervision of Professor Susana Soares.

Duration: The fellowship will have duration of 12 months, possibly renewable for equal periods for up to 24 months, starting on April 2024.

Monthly stipend:

Monthly stipend is €1.259,64 according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_atu… ). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and work insurance.

Selection criteria: The selection methods will be:

Curricular evaluation (CA):

A – Master grade ³ 16 values (20%)

B – Curriculum consistency (30%)

C – Relevant expertise in specific techniques related to the proposed work plan, namely molecular biology, transfection techniques, intracellular calcium monitoring assays, liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, electrophoresis (50%).

AC  = A*20% + B*30% + C*50%

Interview

In the case of admitted candidates whose evaluation does not differ more than 10% from that obtained by the best positioned candidate, the jury will interview these candidates. In this situation, the value of the interview is 10% and the final classification will be calculated as follows:

CF = AC*90% + E*10%

The jury will not award the current scholarship to candidates with a final classification lower than 50%.

Jury composition:

Susana Soares (President), Assistant Professor
