Offer Description

A Research Fellowship (BI) (Reference REQUIMTE 2024-07) on the project 2023.04503.RESTART, supported by national funds by FCT / MCTES, is available at REQUIMTE.

Admission requirements:

BSc degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biotechnology or related scientific area. Frequency of the MSc in the area of Pharmaceutical Sciences or to be enrolled and/or attending a non-degree course taught by a higher education institution in collaboration with an R&D unit. Experience in (i) selective extraction of compounds from natural products, (ii) chemical characterization of extracts from natural matrices, applying different chromatographic techniques, (iii) evaluation of biological activities of extracts, by non-cellular (chemical and enzymatic) assays and cellular assays, with relevance in the context of metabolic diseases.

In case the BSc degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 341/2007 of October 12th, and all formalities established therein must be complied with at the signature of Fellowship contract.

 

Working plan: The candidate of research fellowship shall be performing activities in the scope of the project 2023.04503.RESTART. The work plan involves:

1) Optimisation of green techniques for the extraction and purification of compounds from brown algae of both marine and aquaculture origin;

2) Characterisation of the chemical profile of brown algae extracts;

3) Evaluation of the effect of the obtained extracts on in vitro targets underlying metabolic changes in diabetes.

Work Place: The work will be conducted at Laboratory of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy of University of Porto, under the supervision of Doctor Fátima Fernandes.

 

Duration of the fellowship: The fellowship will have duration of 3 months, possibly renewable for equal periods up to a maximum of 12 months, starting on 1st April 2024.

 

Monthly stipend:

Monthly stipend is €990,98 according to the stipend values established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_atu… ). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and work insurance.

 

Selection criteria: The selection methods will be:

Scientific merit (35%), the suitability of the candidate's profile for the project (35%), motivation and relevant experience for the development of the project (30%).

In the case of admitted candidates whose evaluation does not differ more than 10% from that obtained by the best positioned candidate, the jury will interview these candidates. In this situation, the final rank will be on the basis of 50% weight on combined score obtained in the first stage of the selection, and 50% weight on assessment in the interview.

 

The jury will not award the current scholarship to candidates with a final classification lower than 50%.
