A Research Fellowship (BI) (Reference REQUIMTE 2024-05) on the project “WHEATBIOME - Unravelling the potential of the wheat microbiome for the development of healthier, more sustainable and resilient wheat-derived food & feed products” Grant Agreement 101084344 - HORIZON-CL6-2022-FARM2FORK-01, funded by European Commission, is available at REQUIMTE.

Admission requirements:

Mandatory admission criteria:

- Master's degree in Biochemistry, Food Science and Technology, Quality Control or similar, with a final classification equal to or greater than 18 points.

- Proven fluency (by certificate) in English (written and oral).

- Proficiency in the use of statistical processing and analysis software.

If the master's degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16th , and any formalities established therein must be completed by the date of signature of the fellowship contract.

 

Work plan: The selected candidate will carry out experimental work within the scope of the following tasks:

- Nutritional analysis (e.g. protein, lipid, free sugar and fibre content) of wheat varieties subject to different abiotic pressures;

- Extraction and characterization of primary and secondary metabolites by liquid chromatography associated with mass spectrometry (LC-MS);

- Quantification of gluten proteins and peptides associated with food intolerances and sensitivities;

- Bioaccessibility and bioavailability assays in cellular models of the gastrointestinal tract.

 

Applicable legislation and regulations: Statute of the Scientific Research Fellow, approved by Decree-Law n. 40/2004, of August 18th (republished by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of August 28th ), and Regulation of Scholarships and Research of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in force (https://former.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamentos.phtml.pt ).

 

Workplace: The work will be carried out in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, under the scientific guidance of Prof. Doctor Susana Soares and Doctor Ricardo Dias.

 

Duration: The scholarship will last for 12 months, potentially renewable for equal periods, but cannot exceed the project end date, starting on March 2024.

 

Monthly stipend: Monthly stipend is €1.199,64 according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://former.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.pt ). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and work insurance.

 

Selection criteria:

1. Scientific area of training (20%);

2. Final average for Master's or Integrated Master's (10%);

3. Relevant experience in the scientific area of research (30%);

4. Experience in chromatographic analysis, extractive methods, cell cultures, determination of biochemical parameters and food analysis (20%);

5. Diversity and quality of scientific indicators in the specific areas of the competition, including articles published in international peer-reviewed journals, oral communications, and participation in projects (20%).

 

If there are candidates with a classification whose difference is less than or equal to 10% of the classification obtained by the best candidate, the jury will interview the best classified candidate and the candidates in this situation. In this case, the final classification to be indicated by each member of the jury is 70% based on the curricular and scientific assessment and 30% based on the interview.

Publicity and communication of results: The results of the assessment will be published, via display on the Institution's premises, and the successful candidate will be notified via email.
