A call is open for the award of one Research Fellowship (BI) for a Bachelor degree holder within the scope of the project: "AccessCity4All – Adapting the 15-Minute City Concept to Support Active Mobility in Neighbourhoods with Different Levels of Accessibility" (Project Reference: DUT/0007/2022), funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, I.P.). - DOI:https://doi.org/10.54499/DUT/0007/2022.

The successful candidate will support research activities related to GIS, spatial statistics, accessibility modelling, territorial typologies and dashboard development within an international research consortium involving partners from Portugal, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and Türkiye.

Skills/Qualifications

Candidates should meet the following requirements:

• Enrolment in a Master's programme or non-degree/postgraduate course, preferably related to Geographic Information Systems (GIS);
• Bachelor's degree in Geography or a related field;
• Experience working with Geographic Information Systems;
• Knowledge of databases and data analysis;
• Experience in quantitative and spatial analysis methods (advanced statistics, spatial dispersion and concentration methods, Python and/or R programming, and/or Network Analyst experience will be considered an asset);
• Experience in dashboard development and publication of geospatial information through Web Feature Services (WFS);
• Excellent command of Portuguese and English, both written and spoken.

Specific Requirements

Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree in Geography (Human Geography), Regional and Local Planning, or related fields and be enrolled in:

• a Master's programme; or
• a non-degree course integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, including postgraduate programmes.

Benefits

The monthly maintenance allowance amounts to €1,090.98, in accordance with the FCT fellowship grant table currently in force in Portugal. The fellowship also includes personal accident insurance and voluntary social security contributions, as provided for in the applicable legislation.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must comply with the eligibility conditions established in Article 9 of the FCT Research Fellowship Regulation (Regulation No. 950/2019).

Selection process

Selection will be based on curriculum evaluation.

Evaluation Criteria

• Curriculum Vitae: 80%
• Motivation Letter demonstrating compliance with all admission requirements: 20%

The Selection Committee may invite the top three ranked candidates for an interview.

If interviews are held:

• Interview: 40%
• First-stage evaluation: 60% of the final score.

If no interviews are conducted, final ranking will be based solely on the curriculum evaluation results.

The fellowship may not be awarded if candidates do not match the required profile or fail to achieve a minimum final score of 75 points.

Results Notification

The selected candidate must formally declare acceptance of the fellowship in writing. If the selected candidate declines, the fellowship may be awarded to the next candidate in the final ranking.

Project Overview

Major societal challenges associated with sustainable transitions are decided in cities. In urban planning, the 15-minute city concept represents a promising approach for promoting sustainable urban transitions across European cities. The concept is based on residents' potential accessibility to essential services within their neighbourhoods. Although useful, this approach may be overly simplistic for people-centred and place-sensitive urban planning.

AccessCity4All expands the 15-minute city concept by comparing potential accessibility with accessibility as experienced and perceived by residents. The project focuses on supporting active mobility in different urban environments for people with varying needs and capabilities.

The project combines multiple methods, including:

• Accessibility assessment and modelling;
• Workshops;
• Walk-along interviews with specific target groups;
• Participatory Public GIS (PPGIS);
• Living Labs.

The study involves the cities of Lisbon, Vienna, Groningen, Münster and Ankara and includes the following partners:

• Austrian Academy of Sciences (Project Coordinator);
• University of Groningen, Department of Spatial Planning and Environment;
• ILS Research gGmbH, Research Group Mobilities and Space;
• Gazi University, Faculty of Architecture, Department of City and Regional Planning.

Work Plan

The selected fellow will be responsible for:

• Applying statistical and spatial statistical methods;
• Developing territorial typologies from the case studies, integrating quantitative approaches (including programming-based spatial metrics) and qualitative methods;
• Preparing a project results dashboard;
• Contributing to project outputs and management activities, including organising meetings with Lisbon City Council, preparing presentations for project events and scientific conferences, and other related tasks.

The fellowship is governed by:

• The Portuguese Research Fellow Statute (Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação);
• The FCT Research Fellowship Regulation currently in force;
• The University of Lisbon Research Fellowship Regulation currently in force.

Host Institution and Workplace

The work will be carried out on-site at the Centre for Geographical Studies (CEG), Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (IGOT), University of Lisbon, under the scientific supervision of Professor Eduarda Marques da Costa.

Fellowship Duration

The fellowship will last 3 months, starting in October 2026, under an exclusive dedication regime.

The fellowship may be renewed twice if the project is extended until 30 June 2027.
