Overview
The Spintronics Research Group is focused on deploying Spintronics enabled solutions in industrial products and society at large, while keeping scientific excellence and continuously pushing promising technologies from low TRL to high TRL. To this end, the research group develops its activities along two research lines concerning magnetic field sensors and spin dynamics. This position concerns the research line on magnetic field sensors.
We are looking for a qualified Electrical Engineer to join our team working on project "Newest – New generation of cyberphysical Weighing Systems", POCI-01-0247-FEDER-069716. This project is being executed in a consortium led by Cachapuz – Weighing & Logistics Systems, Lda, with INL - International Nanotechnology Laboratory, Universidade do Minho and DTx – Digital Transformation CoLAB as partners. NeWeSt aims to promote a paradigm shift in the weighing systems ecosystem, exploring a new concept load cell integrating a new type of sensor whose development is the aim of this position.
Job Duties
The job duties will be the following:
1. Create a new laboratory setup to characterize magnetoresistive sensors as position sensors.
2. Design and produce a solution compatible with the targets of the project.
3. Produce magnetic tunnel junction sensors using the established nano-fabrication process developed at INL 1000m2 clean room for 200mm wafers.
4. Optimize the design of a magnet/electromagnet, produce a prototype and characterize the system in laboratory conditions.
5. Participate in the collaborative work to produce a prototype working a real environments.
6. Collect and analyse data to characterize single sensors and the full solution.
7. Participate in project meetings, elaborate project documentation, reports and presentations as well as scientific publications concerning the achievements of the project.
Mandatory Qualifications
Education
- PhD in Physics, Material Sciences or related field.
Experience
- Strong background and experience in magnetism and spintronic devices is required.
Technical Skills
- Capacity to design and automate data acquisition setups, including the development of software required to gather and analyse data (using .Net, Python, LabView, etc…);
- Experience in the operation of common clean room tools used in the nanofabrication of magnetic tunnel junctions, including: PVD deposition systems, Ion Milling, Direct Write Laser Lithography, CVD deposition tools, RIE tools, SEM inspection tools and metrology instruments (contact profilometers, sheet resistance mapping, etc..);
- Capacity to follow and design a run-sheet for the nanofabrication of devices compatible with specifications of the project;
- Capacity to simulate magnetic fields generated by magnets and electromagnets using appropriated software tools (COMSOL, FEMM, etc…);
- Experience in the electrical characterization of devices and ability to analyse and present data gathered using usual scripting and analysis tools (python, mathematica, matlab, etc…).
Other Skills
- Good English (written and spoken) and communication skills are required.
Preferred Qualifications
- First-hand direct experience in the micro/nanofabrication of magnetic tunnel junction nanodevices is highly valued.
- First-hand experience in the system level integration of spintronic components is valued.
- Knowledge and first-hand experience in the measurement and characterization of noise of spintronic devices is valued.
- Knowledge of electronic circuits and systems is valued.

How the Selection Process works
A. Applications eligibility check
