Are you an experienced Microfabrication Engineer? Would you like to be a key player in the development of novel micro- and nano-fabrication processes? INL is seeking a qualified engineer to reinforce its cleanroom staff and activities with a strong focus in Magnetic tunnel junction device fabrication. The selected candidate will be integrated in the Micro and Nanofabrication Facility team.

Job Role & Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will undertake the following main activities and responsibilities:

  • Participate in the production of MTJ sensor wafers (200mm) integrated in running industrial contracts;
  • Run test lots where specific process steps will be optimized aiming at improving key process metrics, either by reducing the dispersion of parameters extracted at device level or improving the key figure of merit of devices optimized for specific applications;
  • Take responsibility for tasks related with the performance monitoring of specific tools and associated service operations as well as user training.

The diversity of processes that the candidates are able to integrate will be a selection criterion.

Job Requirements

Candidates should meet the following requirements:


  • At least MSc degree in Physics, Physical Engineering, Materials Science, Electronics, or related areas.

Experience and Technical Skills

  • Previous hands-on experience in cleanroom processing is required;
  • Previous hands-on experience on processing TMR or GMR devices or equivalent, including if possible, deposition tools;
  • Previous hands-on experience in the operation of Physical and chemical vapor deposition; Ion milling, Wet etch techniques, Lithography pattern transfer down to ~1-5 µm;
  • Experience in metrology tools and systems is valued;
  • Previous participation in collaborative national, international and/or industrial research projects.

 Personal Skills

  • Strong motivation to work both independently and as part of a team in an interdisciplinary environment, with the ability to pay close attention to detail and to meet deadlines;
  • Team work spirit;
  • Good communication skills;
  • “Hands-on” approach together with a high commitment in respecting working deadlines;
  • Highly organised and dynamic.


Excellent communication skills in English are required since it’s the working language of INL.


The work plan will be developed at the INL under the guidance of Margaret Costa.

Duration of the contract

The total duration of the employment contract shall be 48 months and may be renewed based on the performance of the individual and the duration of the project. The expected starting date is June 2021.
