Position description
The University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) invites applications for the position of Professor and Director of the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024.
The California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) is an integrated research and discovery facility with locations at UC Santa Barbara and UCLA. As one of four California Institutes for Science and Innovation (Cal-ISI), the CNSI builds on a visionary investment by the State of California in future education, research, and technological innovation. The mission of the Institute is to create an inclusive, collaborative, closely integrated, and strongly interactive environment that will foster innovation in nanosystems research, educate the next generation of diverse leaders in science and engineering, and bring scientific and technological innovation into the economy and society. The CNSI is housed in the picturesque Elings Hall and boasts 61,000 sq ft. of laboratory, administrative, and classroom space.
The successful candidate is expected to advance the research enterprise at CNSI across a broad front of activities while continuing their own internationally recognized, extramurally funded research program, mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, participating in ongoing teaching programs, and participating in other university service and professional activities. Candidates with research backgrounds in experimental science in fields such as condensed matter physics, material science, chemistry, quantum information science, electrical and computer engineering, and related fields are encouraged to apply. The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service as appropriate to the position.
As the CNSI Director, the candidate is expected to foster innovation in nanosystems research, promote collaboration between academia and industry, oversee resource allocation, and ensure compliance with institutional policies. The CNSI Director has primary responsibility for the overall management, performance, and impact of the institute including budgets, academic and industry programs at all campuses participating in the institute. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a world-class team of scientists and drive scientific and technological innovation for the benefit of the University and the State of California. The Director will have a permanently tenured faculty position in an appropriate academic department(s) at UCSB.
