Notice is hereby given that, at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), for a period of 30 working days, starting the day immediately following publication of this notice in Diário da República, an international vacancy is open for the recruitment of an Assistant Professor, in the form of a public employment contract, in the disciplinary/scientific area of SUSTAINABLE DESIGN, at UTAD, under the terms of articles 37 to 51, 61 and 62-A of the University Teaching Career Statute, republished by Decree-Law no. 205/2009, of August 31 (abbreviated to ECDU), and other applicable legislation, namely Regulation n.º 106/2019 - General Regulations for Competitions for the Recruitment of Full, Associate and Assistant Professors at UTAD, published in the Diário da República on January 25, 2019, hereinafter referred to as the Regulation.

The person recruited will sign an employment contract in public functions for an indefinite period, in the category for which this vacancy was opened, with a trial period of five years.

In accordance with articles 37 to 51 of the ECDU and other applicable legislation, as well as article 8 of the Regulation, the following rules will be observed:

I - Authorization order from the Rector

This vacancy was opened by Order of the Rector, issued on 05/01/2024, following the, confirmation of the existence of adequate budget funding and that the job now being advertised is foreseen and not occupied in the University's staff map and characterized therein, so that its holder must carry out the activities attributed to an Assistant Professor at UTAD, as defined, in particular, by article 4 and n.º 3 of article 5 of the ECDU.

II - Period of validity 

The vacancy is valid only for filling the above-mentioned post and will end when it is filled.

III - Place of work

University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, Quinta de Prados, 5000-801 Vila Real, Portugal.

IV - Requirements for administrative admission to the vacancy

IV.1 - Meet the general admission requirements for recruitment to public services.

IV.2 - Under the terms of article 41-A of the ECDU, only those who hold a doctoral degree in the scientific area of Design may be admitted to this vacancy.

IV.3 - If the doctorate was awarded by a foreign educational institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law n.º 66/2018, of August 16th , and the formalities set out therein must be fulfilled by the deadline for applications.

IV.4 - Proficiency in spoken and written Portuguese. Applicants of foreign nationality, except those from Portuguese-speaking countries, must be proficient in spoken and written Portuguese at the common reference level B1 or higher. This requirement is officially recognized through a certificate or diploma of communicative competence in Portuguese from the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

IV.5 - The provisions of Chapter VI of the Regulations apply with regard to proof and fulfilment of the requirements for admission and exclusion of candidates.

V - Absolute Merit Admission Requirements

V.1 - The provisions of Article 10, Chapter III of the Regulations applies to the admission of candidates on absolute merit.

V.2 - The Jury will decide whether to approve or reject the candidate’s admission on absolute merit, by a justified roll-call vote in which abstentions are not allowed.

V.3 - A candidate who obtains the favourable vote of more than half of the voting members of the jury will be considered to have been approved on absolute merit.

V.4 - A vote against approval on absolute merit must be based on one or more of the following circumstances:

a) The candidate's scientific curriculum is manifestly outside the disciplinary/scientific area and sub-area of the vacancy; and/or

b) If the branch of knowledge and/or speciality in which the doctorate was awarded does not prove to be adequate academic training for the exercise of teaching functions in the disciplinary/scientific area for which the competition has been opened and this lack is not considered to be covered by other training held by the candidate; and/or

c) The relevance, quality and timeliness of the candidate's curriculum vitae, and the most relevant and impactful academic contributions selected by the candidate, are clearly insufficient for the exercise of teaching functions at UTAD, the candidate's Curriculum Vitae does not include the publication of at least 3 articles or chapters, as author or co-author, in publications relevant to the subject area for which the competition is open.

 

Exclusion or definitive rejection on absolute merit depends on a prior hearing to be held by the jury, which is also a necessary prerequisite for progressing to the next stage.

 

VI - Assessment parameters and ranking on relative merit, respective weighting and final evaluation system

VI.1 - The purpose of this open position is to assess the ability and performance of candidates in the various aspects which, under the terms of article 4 and n.º 3 of article 5 of the ECDU, form part of the duties to be performed if, as a result of this opening, they are hired.

VI.2 - The selection method to be used is curricular assessment (CA), with the classification obtained by the following formula, rounded to the nearest tenth:

CA = SP + PA + OA

A. Scientific performance (SP), obtained using the following expression:

B. Pedagogical ability (PA), obtained using the following expression:

The weights of elements A, B and C of the curricular assessment (CA) total 100 per cent.

VI.3 - The following activities must be considered in the evaluation and ranking parameters:

A - Scientific performance

A-1) Scientific or artistic production

Quantity and relevance of scientific or artistic work published, taking into account the most significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge, as well as the quality of the publication vehicles and the references made to them.

A-2) Coordination of and participation in scientific, artistic or technological development projects and supervision of R&D grant holders

Experience in scientific, cultural creation or technological development projects and their relevance, as well as the potential to efficiently and effectively coordinate and integrate nationally and internationally funded projects.

Creation and leadership of research teams, supervision of research fellows, scientific management of organisational and research units, membership of governing bodies of national and international scientific associations, participation in research units or centres, taking into account the duration of the activity and the scope of the role.

A-3) Recognition by the scientific community and society in general

Participation in juries for academic exams and in national or international evaluation and scientific consultancy panels for grants, projects, researchers or research units, participation in committees for scientific events and active collaboration in editing, evaluating and reviewing national or international scientific publications.

B - Pedagogical ability

B-1) Teaching activities in higher education institutions, teaching of curricular units, involvement in the management of curricular units (lecturer or teacher) and coordination of courses, directly related to undergraduate and postgraduate training.

B-2) Pedagogical performance

Quality factors in pedagogical performance, considering, where available, the results of surveys on the teaching/learning process, teaching resources and teaching publications with ISBNs. Coordination activities and participation in pedagogical projects should also be taken into account.

B-3) Pedagogical innovation and valorisation

This includes the promotion of pedagogical initiatives to improve teaching and learning processes, the development of new curricular units and changes to study plans or curricular units, participation in pedagogical structures, pedagogical awards, the promotion and dynamisation of processes to improve the pedagogical activity of study cycles or other teaching activities.

B-4) Supervision and guidance of students with completed exams

Supervising final course work, master's dissertations, doctoral theses and post-doctoral projects. When assessing this parameter, the number and diversity of completed supervisions should be taken into account.

C - Other activities relevant to the mission of the higher education institution

C-1) Participation in management activities in higher education or research institutions

Participation in management and coordination bodies and other activities necessary for the smooth running of higher education or research institutions.

C-2) Extension

Participation in activities involving the public sector and the community, including the provision of relevant services, consultancy and expertise.

VI.4 - Once the classification of the curricular assessment has been obtained, based on the provisions of point VI.2, the jury will proceed to rank these candidates following the procedure set out in article 20 of the Regulations.

VII - Submission and Application Form

VII.1 - Candidates must access and register on the Careers@UTAD electronic platform, available at https://careers.utad.pt , in order to submit their application, selecting the procedure they wish to apply for.

VII.2 - Applications must be submitted exclusively in digital format, in portable document format (pdf).

VII.3 - The following documents must be submitted with the application:

a) Curriculum vitae, dated and signed, containing the information necessary to assess the application, organised in accordance with the order and designations of each element (Scientific Performance, Pedagogical Ability and Other Relevant Activities) and the assessment parameters set out in point VI of the notice; The curriculum vitae must also explicitly include the ''Scopus Author ID'', which makes it possible to identify the list of publications, the number of respective citations and the H-index according to the Scopus source;

b) A copy of the qualifications certificates;

c) A separate copy of the 3 articles or chapters that have been scientifically refereed and are relevant to the disciplinary/scientific area/sub-areas for which the vacancy is open, in order to verify compliance with the provisions on n.º 4 of Article 10 of the Regulations; d) Other work that the candidate considers relevant for the jury's assessment.

VII.4 - If the application contains a classified document that reveals a commercial or industrial secret, or a secret relating to literary, artistic or scientific property, the candidate must expressly indicate this reservation, failing which the work in question will be freely accessible to any of the other candidates when they consult the file.

VII.5 - On the electronic platform, the candidate must:

a) Declare, on their honor, that they meet the requirements for admission to the vacancy set out in the notice and in the law, and that all the information and documentation included in the application is authentic and subject to effective proof, whenever requested;

b) Express their consent for communications and notifications within the scope of the tender procedure to take place by email, indicating their address.

VIII - Language

Under the terms of articles 45 and 46 of the ECDU, in conjunction with article 14 of the Regulations and in accordance with the approval of the CRUP, the jury is composed of the following members:

Prof. Doutor José Miguel Santos Araújo Carvalhais Fonseca, Full Professor at the University of Porto;

Prof. Doutora Maria Emília Capucho Duarte, Full Professor at the University Europeia;

Prof. Doutora Teresa Cláudia Magalhães Franqueira Baptista, Associate Professor with Aggregation at the University of Aveiro.

If the President of the Jury does not belong to the scientific area or field for which this vacancy is open, he must, before knowing the identity of the candidates and their curricula, define the criteria he will use if, eventually, he is called upon to exercise tie-breaking powers, and if he does not do so, the criterion to be used will be the date on which the respective doctoral degrees were taken, with preference being given to the candidate who took them the longest.
