NOTICE REF 33/2021 FOR THE AWARD OF RESEARCH GRANT

A tender is hereby opened for the award of one Research Grant (RG), Bolseiro Mestre para aplicações de visualização e realidade virtual, Perfil 95, under project AUGMANITY: Augmented Humanity (Projeto Mobilizador nº46103, POCI-01-0247-FEDER-046103 and LISBOA-01-0247-FEDER-046103) – IEETA, under the following conditions:

  • Scientific Area: informatics and related fields.
  • Financing Source: European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) through the Competitiveness and Internationalization Operational Program and through the Operational Program Lisboa 2020 [POCI-01-0247-FEDER-046103 and LISBOA-01-0247-FEDER-046103].
  • 3. Admission Requirements: Masters in Informatics or related fields, enrolled in a doctoral program or in a course that does not confer academic degree integrated in the educational project of the University of Aveiro. Previous research experience in the fields of this call will be positively valued.

    The proof of enrolment must be made available until the contract is awarded. If the candidate cannot add a proof of enrollment at the time of applying for this scholarship, the candidate must attach a declaration of honor to confirm that they meet the requirements for enrolment in a doctoral program or in a course that does not confer an academic degree.

    If the qualification has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution it must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, under the terms of the provisions of article 25 of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16th, which approves the legal regime of recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of Higher Education, attributed by foreign higher education institutions, and of paragraph e) of no. 2 of article 4 of Decree-Law no. 60/2018, of August 3rd, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled before the contract is signed .

    4. Eligibility: Applicants are eligible if they comply with paragraph a) of no.1 of article 2, of the Research Fellow Statute in the wording given by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of August 28th, and also the provisions of article 9 of the Scientific Research Grant Regulations of the University of Aveiro. The duration of the RG is, as a rule, annual, extendable to a maximum of two years, in the case of master's degrees, integrated master's degrees and non-degree courses, and the respective duration, including renewal, may be consecutive or interpolated, pursuant to no. 5 of Article 9 of the above mentioned Regulation.

    5. Work plan: The scholarship holder will be responsible for the study, development and testing of algorithms for object recognition in digital images with the objective of integrating in an augmented reality application to be developed in the above mentioned project. The main activities to be carried out within the scope of the scholarship are:

    PPS4 - A24 T1 – Refine case studies of PPS4 identifying interesting tasks based on the available data. This task will also involve the study of libraries and architecture adequate for data presentation and visualization. This task will result in initial prototypes of data visualization in industrial environments.

    PPS4 – A24 T4 – Based on the initial visualization prototypes the grantee will have to evaluate the best way to integrate these visualizations in an Augmented reality. The focus of the task will be the presentation of information in AR using simple tracking mechanism (as markers). It will be possible to consider different approaches for situated visualization, interaction and configuration/annotations or even interaction with remote users. Initial prototype will be used to solve usability issues evolving to more advanced proof of concepts. Work will be mainly oriented to mobile and tablet solutions, but other more advanced mechanisms might also be considered sur as AR Head Mounted Displays.

    PPS4 – A25 T4 and T5 – The grantee will be also responsible to test the AR visualization prototypes developed in the previous tasks in terms of usability, performance and reliability in uncontrolled real environments according to the case study considered.

    In addition, it is intended that the scholarship holder support the research team associated with this project, including writing reports, surveying experimental data, data processing and other similar activities.

    In addition to these tasks directly linked to the project, it is also expected that the scholarship holder will participate in the following activities:

    • Preparation of articles for publication in national and international scientific journals and conferences;

    • Dissemination of project results at conferences and other scientific, academic or industrial events.

    6. Applicable legislation and regulations: Research Fellow Statute, as amended by Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of August 28th; Scientific Research Grant Regulation of the University of Aveiro, Regulation No. 292/2020, published in Diário da República No. 61, Series II, of March 26th; Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16th (Legal regime of recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of higher education awarded by foreign higher education institutions).

    7. Workplace: The work will be carried out at Institute of Electronics and Informatics Engineering of Aveiro of the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics of the University of Aveiro, under the scientific supervision of the Professors Maria Beatriz de Sousa Santos.

    8. Duration of the grant: The grant duration will be twelve months, expecting to start in January, 2021, and may be renewed up to the maximum limit of the grant approved funding. Under no circumstances shall it exceed the limits defined in nos. 5 and 6 of article 9, of Regulation no. 292/2020, of February 28th, published in Diário da República, no. 61, Series II, of March 26th (Scientific Research Grant Regulation of the University of Aveiro).

    9. Amount of monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the grant corresponds to €1,104.64, according to the table of monthly maintenance allowances, set out in Appendix III of the Scientific Research Grant Regulation of the University of Aveiro, . The grant may also include other components, namely tuition fees for grants associated with obtaining an academic degree or diploma up to the maximum amount provided for therein in the table in Appendix III of Regulation 292/2020. The project also supports tuition fees during the duration of the grant, having in return the provision for supporting and teaching service at the university.

    10. Selection methods: The selection methods to be used will be the following: curriculum vitae assessment and interview for the three applicants with higher curriculum vitae assessment, with the weights of 75% and 25% respectively.

    11. Composition of the Selection Jury: The jury responsible for the selection will consist of the following professors: Paulo Miguel de Jesus Dias (Chair of the Selection Committee),

    12. Deadline for applications and how to submit applications: The call is open from 6 to 20 December, 2021 and only applications submitted within the deadline will be admitted.

    Applications must be formalized by sending a letter of application accompanied by the following documents: dated and signed Curriculum Vitae dated and signed, Degree certificates, declaration of honor and other supporting documents deemed relevant. They shall also indicate the e-mail address to which by such indication they accept to be notified for all purposes within this procedure.

    13. Form of publication/notification of results: The results of the evaluation shall be made public no later than 60 working days after the closing date for submission of applications and shall be notified to the applicants. The candidates are informed, in a prior hearing, under the terms established in the Code of Administrative Procedure, of the probable meaning of the final decision, and may, within 10 working days of this notification, express their opinion on this decision. The final results may be appealed to the Rector, to be submitted within 10 working days from the respective notification.

    14. Tender duration: The final ranking list of candidates will be valid until 60 working days after the final date of application submission upon notification to the candidates for the purpose of constituting a reserve list for selection.
