international call for applications for the post of Auxiliary Researcher

Under the terms of Order no. 181/2023, of 04 January, by delegation of powers, the Director of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the New University of Lisbon, Prof. Dr. José Júlio Alves Alferes, makes known, by order of 01/03/2024, that, for a period of 15 working days from the day immediately following the publication of this Notice in the Official Gazette, an international call for applications, with internal reference “Inv.Aux-4-DQ”, for the recruitment of 1 (one) Auxiliary Researcher, under an open-ended employment contract, under the terms of Decree-Law no. No. 57/2016, of 29 August, amended by Law No. 57/2017, of 19 July, in the scientific area of Chemical and Biological Engineering, sub-area of Bioprocess Engineering, emphasis on Waste valorisation for the production of Polyhydroxyalkanoates, under the Stimulus to Institutional Scientific Employment – CEEC INSTITUCIONAL 2021 programme contract, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., to support the development of R&D activities, signed between FCT, I.P. and UNL, under the terms of the Scientific Employment Regulation (REC), Regulation no. 607-A/2017, of 22 November, as amended, and other applicable national and Community legislation.

  • – Workplace:
  • Installations of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of NOVA University, Caparica Campus.

    Department of Chemistry, Research Centre - Applied Biomolecular Sciences Unit-UCIBIO.

  • – Activities and Functions:
  • The selected candidate will perform the functions of Auxiliary Researcher and will carry out the following tasks:

    a) Identify and characterise industrial waste/effluents with the potential to be recovered using bioprocesses;

    b) Develop sustainable biological processes for the treatment of waste and the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) on a laboratory and pilot scale;

    c) Interacting with national and international industries with a view to establishing scientific/technological collaborations;

    d) Preparing applications for national and international projects.

    The aim of this work plan is to contribute to the objectives of the 2030 Agenda, in particular objectives: Zero Hunger (SDG 2); Clean water and sanitation; (SDG 6); Affordable and clean energy (SDG 7); Industry innovation and infrastructure; (SDG 9); Responsible consumption and production (SDG12); Climate action (SDG 13); Life below water (SDG 14) Life on land (SDG 15).

  • - Remuneration position:
  • The definition of the position is based on the salary levels of the categories in Annex I of the Statute of the Scientific Research Career, approved by Decree-Law no. 124/99, of 20 April, in its current wording, corresponding to the 1st salary position, salary level 195, which corresponds to the value of € 3.427,59.

  • - Modality and duration of the contract:
  • The opening of the present tender procedure is intended for the selection of a doctoral position for the exercise of scientific research activities under an employment contract for an unspecified resolute term, being the basis for hiring the execution of a determined, precisely defined and non-lasting service, being the hiring compulsorily financed whatever its origin.
  • The open-ended contract will last for as long as is necessary to carry out the project, or for as long as the respective justification persists, but may not exceed the maximum limit set out in Article 6(3) of Decree-Law 57/2016 of 29 August, i.e. 6 years.
  • – Candidate admission requirements:
  • In accordance with article 12 of Decree-Law no. 57/2016, of 29 August, the candidate must:
    • Hold a PhD degree in the area of the competition or in related areas.
    • To have a relevant scientific curriculum in the area of the competition.
    • National, foreign and stateless candidates may apply to this competition provided that their doctoral degree is duly registered and/or recognised in Portugal (mandatory requirement).
  • – Application procedure:
  • The application must be completed by filling in the respective application form, which is available at https ://www.fc t.u nl.pt/en/faculdade/concursos/investigadores.
  • The application file should be accompanied by documentation in Portuguese or English.
  • The application should be submitted by e-mail, containing the following documents:
  • Curriculum vitae of the candidate, organized in accordance with the systematic of point IX of this Announcement, which must contain:
  • The "Researcher ID", "Scopus Author ID" and "Google Scholar ID" identifications;
  • Research and development activities and all other activities considered relevant to the present tendering procedure, in accordance with the terms of this notice;
  • Scientific development plan - scientific development plan (max. 2 pages), within the disciplinary area of the competition, according to the activities and functions to be performed, and articulated with the results of their previous scientific activity and professional experience, as well as their academic and professional training;
  • Certificate proving the degree of Doctor in the disciplinary area of Chemical and Biological Engineering or in related areas;
  • Published works, mentioned in the curriculum vitae, namely the most representative ones, regarding their contribution to the development and evolution of the disciplinary area in which the competition is open;
  • A statement under oath that if the jury chooses to request the documentation indicated in the previous items or any other scientific documentation mentioned in the candidate's curriculum vitae, it shall be delivered within 10 working days;
  • Other documents that the candidates may find relevant for the analysis of their application.
  • If a member of the jury participates who is not fluent in Portuguese, the documents for the candidates' prior hearing and claims that must be assessed by the jury must be presented in English.
  • – Submission of the application:
  • The application documents must be submitted by the 15th working day after the day following the publication of this Notice in the Diário da República.
  • Candidates should submit their application documents in PDF format by e-mail to the following address: [email protected].
  • - Interview
  • The Jury will decide in the first meeting if it is necessary to interview all the candidates or some of the candidates.
  • The interview has a maximum weight of 10% of the total evaluation.
  • The interview shall aim at clarifying or explaining the elements contained in the candidates' Curriculum Vitae.
  • - Evaluation parameters
  • The present competition is designed to evaluate candidates' capacity and performance in the different parameters under the terms of no. 1 of article 5 of DL no. 57/2016.
  • The curricular evaluation of the various candidates in each of the areas described below shall take into consideration the scientific area in which the competition is open.
  • The parameters to be taken into consideration in the curricular evaluation of the candidates, in each of the strands, are those listed below, referring to the last five years:
  • a) Quality of scientific and technological work (QTCT);

    b) Scientific and technological production (PCT);

    c) Applied or practice-based research activities (AIAB);

    d) Extension and knowledge dissemination activities (AEDC);

    e) Science, technology and innovation programme management activities (AGCTI);

    f) Scientific development plan

    X   – Reasons for exclusion

    The following are grounds for exclusion from admission to the competition:

  • Incorrectly formalising the application;
  • Failure to submit the documents required in points V(3)(a) to (d), or their submission is illegible or invalid.
  • XI  – Ranking of candidates

  • The jury shall deliberate on the admissibility of the candidates, by justified roll-call vote, expressed by the formulas Rejected or Approved.
  • Each member of the jury shall make a justified proposal of rejected or approved for each of the candidates.
  • The candidate who obtains the favorable vote of more than half of the members of the jury shall be considered approved.
  • XII – Voting order and methodology

  • Once the candidates who have passed in absolute merit have been definitively identified, the jury will proceed to their relative ranking.
  • Each member of the jury shall carry out a curricular evaluation of the candidates by presenting a written opinion, to be later included in the minutes, in which they propose the ordering of the candidates duly based on the evaluation criteria indicated in this notice, scoring each candidate for each criterion on a numerical scale from 0 to 100 points.
  • The evaluation criteria indicated shall be weighted as follows:
  • a) Quality of scientific and technological work (QTCT): 25%

    The relevance of the results obtained by the candidate will be taken into account, with great emphasis on the work indicated by the candidate as their most significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge in the area for which the competition is open, namely in the development of biological processes for the treatment and valorisation of waste for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoate biopolymers.

    b) Scientific and technological production (PCT): 25%

    Scientific production in the subject area of the competition (books, book chapters, articles in scientific journals, papers and communications at conferences, patents and other forms of scientific production considered relevant by the jury), in terms of its quality and quantity, valued for its impact and recognition in the scientific community. The scientific merit of candidates whose scientific production reveals autonomy and scientific leadership should be valued.

    Experience in teaching/advanced training, namely in supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students (masters, doctorates and post-doctorates) in the scientific area of the call.

  • Applied or practice-based research activities (AIAB): 30%.
  • Participation in relevant scientific projects in the thematic area of the call; the candidate's previous experience and potential to coordinate and actively integrate funded national and international projects in the area of the call will be valorized; Proven experience conducted in close collaboration with industry, technology transfer and practical applications in the industrial sector.

    d) Extension and knowledge dissemination activities (AEDC): 5%

    Extension activities and the dissemination of scientific knowledge, namely the organisation of courses, seminars and national and international conferences.

    e) Science, technology and innovation programme management activities (AGCTI): 5%

    Participation and performance in tasks assigned by the management bodies of the institutions to which you have been linked. Performance of tasks to economically and socially valorise knowledge, namely through management and provision of services to the community.

    f) Scientific Development Plan (PDC): 10%

    Scientific development plan, related to the research lines in the area for which the competition to which the candidate proposes to dedicate himself/herself is opened in the Associated Laboratory i4HB, obeying the following requirements:

    i) Identification of the objectives of the project that the candidate intends to develop, demonstrating what advances could result from the research regarding the current state of the art in that area;

    ii) Description, systematic and concise, of the research strategies and methodologies that the candidate proposes to adopt to achieve the proposed objectives, the main expected results, and the impact that these could have on the development of their career and in the community.

    iii) The scientific development plan cannot exceed 2 pages A4 written in font size 12 pt.

  • The ordering of the Approved candidates shall be done by a vote of the jury members, respecting the order presented in the opinion referred to in the previous number, under the following terms:
  • The first vote is intended to determine the candidate to be placed first;
  • In the voting referred to in the previous paragraph, if a candidate obtains more than half of the votes to be placed first, he/she shall be ordered in that position;
  • Should the situation referred to in the previous sub-paragraph not occur, a new vote shall be held, only among the candidates who obtained votes for first place, after withdrawing the candidate who received the least votes for that position in the previous vote;
  • If there is more than one candidate to be withdrawn, due to an equal number of votes, with a minimum of one vote each, a vote shall be held only on those candidates in order to determine the candidate to be withdrawn from the following vote; in that vote, each member shall vote, from among the candidates with equal votes, for the candidate occupying the lowest position in the ranking on his or her report
  • In case of a tie, the tie shall be broken by the tie-breaker vote or casting vote of the jury chairman.
  • Voting shall be repeated until it is determined, by the process previously described, which candidate shall be ranked first. If only two candidates remain and each one obtains half of the votes, the tie-breaker is made through the quality vote of the jury chairperson;
  • Once the candidate for the first place is chosen, he/she is removed from the voting and the entire process is repeated for the second place and so on until the ordered list of all the candidates is obtained.
  • XIII – Notifications and Hearing of Interested Parties

  • A prior hearing shall be held, under the terms of the Administrative Procedure Code, for candidates who have been rejected, and for candidates who have been placed on the ranking list of candidates who cannot be filled for the position open for competition. All the candidates shall be notified of the homologation of the jury's final decision.
  • Notifications shall be made by e-mail.
  • The tender dossier may be consulted by the candidates, in the Human Resources Division of FCT NOVA, under the terms indicated in the above-mentioned notification.
