Job (TWO): Research fellowships

Reference: BIOPOLIS 2024-04

Main research field: Marine Ecology

 

We offer two Research Fellowship to two master students (Reference BIOPOLIS 2024-04) on the scope of the project “Vulnerability of commercially valuable mako sharks in the South Atlantic to fisheries in a changing climate”, FCT grant PTDC/ASP-PES/2503/2020, at CIBIO/Associação BIOPOLIS to analise data obtained from satellite transmitters attached to sharks. Tasks will involve integration of environmental with shark behavioural and movement data; the study of mako shark risk to fisheries in the South Atlantic ocean, and to estimate its impacts in a future climate change scenario.

 

Admission requirements: Candidates with a bachelor’s degree (BSc) in marine biology or related fields, preferably with previous experience in analyses of fisheries and telemetry data. Preference will be given to candidates with: 

  • Experience in handling marine animals;
  • Experience in marine fieldwork;
  • Experience in analysing bio-logging and fisheries data;
  • Programming skills in R, and experience in using GIS software;
  • Fluency in English.

 

The candidate should be able to work well within a team and possess troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. The candidate must present a CV compatible with the work plan.

 

Working plan: Within the scope of the work, the following tasks will be developed:

  • Analyses of spatial movement and behavioural data obtained from satellite telemetry;
  • Intgration of environmental with bio-logging data;
  • Analyses of fisheries data to identify risk areas for sharks in a climate change scenario;
  • Supporting reporting activities and dissemination of results.

 

Applicable Legislation: Law nº.40/2004, 18th August (Research Fellow Statute) amended and republished by Decreto-Lei n.º 123/2019, 28th August; FCT Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt ).

 

Workplace: The work will primarily be done at the CIBIO-Biopolis, Vairão, Vila do Conde. Working periods in partner Research Institutions may take place.

 

Duration of the fellowship: 6 months, with the possibility of renovation if project duration extended

 

Monthly stipend: Monthly stipend is €1199,64 according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https ://w ww.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/Tabela_de_Valores_SMM_2023.pdf). . Payment will be made by bank transfer every month. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and work insurance.

 

Expect starting date: 1st of February 2024

 

Selection criteria: Assessment will be made in accordance with admission requirements (see above) and will be based on:

a) the relevance of previous experience in analysing fisheries and satellite telemetry data (70%);

b) the quality of the curriculum vitae (30%);

 

The jury may not award the fellowship if the quality of the candidates is inferior to what is intended. In the case of admitted candidates whose evaluation does not differ more than 10% from that obtained by the best-positioned candidate, the jury will interview these candidates. This will be aimed at obtaining clarifications about the curricular elements and additional information, as well as evaluating the attitude profile and motivation of the candidate. The final score of each jury member is obtained by the following assessment: 80% scientific and curricular career evaluation and 20% interview.

 

Jury composition: The Jury will be chaired by Dr Marisa Vedor (CIBIO, having as effective members Dr Nuno Queiroz (CIBIO) and Dr Fernando Lima (CIBIO).

 

Publicity and communication of results: The ranking of applications will be published in a visible and public area of Institution facilities, and all candidates will be informed by email about the result of their application.
