Job description:

WavEC – Offshore Renewables is recruiting a researcher in Marine Biology, with experience in underwater noise, to conduct tasks related with sampling and research of underwater noise propagation in the aquatic environment. The researcher should have training and expertise on the potential impacts of noise on marine biodiversity, with a special focus on marine mammals. The selected candidate is expected to collaborate in ongoing activities in the framework of European and national projects, as well as services. The selected candidate will be integrated in the Marine Environment and Licensing Team and will develop research on management and mitigation measures and on the development of new methods and metrics to evaluate underwater noise. In addition, the candidate must have skills related to data collection in the coastal and marine environment and with the mapping and spatial analysis of marine data.

The researcher will be under the coordination of the head of the Marine Environment and Licensing team.

THE sucCESSFUl CANDIDATE MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING PROFILE:

Education: Master's or Degree

Scientific Area: Marine Biology/ Marine Ecology/ Marine Sciences or similar areas;

Requirements for admission:

  • Experience in handling acoustic sensors (e.g., hydrophones, C-Pods, Sound Traps, etc.);
  • Analytical capacity on the environmental impacts of underwater noise on marine communities;
  • Experience in field work in the marine environment;
  • Academic/professional experience in the acquisition of environmental and biological data, in various aspects of marine science;
  • Knowledge of marine spatial planning tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, R);
  • Experience in writing technical and scientific reports;
  • Fluency in Portuguese and English

Although these are not mandatory requirements, the candidate should preferably have the following skills:

  • Ability to write scientific publications;
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis;
  • Knowledge from the user perspective of the Distance software;
  • Underwater noise propagation modelling;
  • Observation and identification of cetaceans;
  • Experience or participation in planning and organization of field work and campaigns;
  • Autonomy and versatility;
  • Holding a navigation chart and a license for VHF radiotelephony operation and/or a diving course or other certifications in the area of maritime operations is valued.

Since its creation in 2003, WavEC has focused its activity on R&D&I applied to offshore renewables (device design, monitoring and techno-economic optimization, environmental assessment, policy support and dissemination, among others), rapidly becoming an institution of reference across Europe.

Job offer DETAILS

Expected start date: preferably November 1, 2021

Workplace: The work will be carried out at the WavEC offices in Lisbon and whenever necessary in monitoring activities at sea.

Employer: WavEC Offshore Renewables

Duration of employment contract: 12-month contract, after which its renewal will be evaluated.

Remuneration: to be agreed, taking into account the candidate's profile and experience, with other compensations associated with the position and its performance being included in the remuneration, including meal allowance and health insurance.
