    Job: Junior Bioinformatician

A position for a Junior Bioinformatician (reference BIOPOLIS 2024-17) is now open at CIBIO/Associação BIOPOLIS in the scope of european research projects, such as “eDNAqua-plan - A Plan towards an eDNA reference library and data repository for Aquatic Organisms, navigating Europe towards the next generation biodiversity monitoring” and “DNAquaIMG: Innovating transnational aquatic biodiversity monitoring using high-throughput DNA tools and automated image recognition”.

Admission requirements: Applications can be submitted by any national, foreign, and stateless candidate(s) holding a MSc degree in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Genomics, or a closely related field.

We seek candidates that:

  • Have 1-2 years of experience as a bioinformatician or a similar role.
  • Are competent in Linux operating systems and scripting languages (Shell/Bash).
  • Have experience working with high-throughput sequencing (HTS) data.
  • Are proficient in data analysis tools and techniques, including statistics and software packages (R, Python), including R notebooks and Jupyter Notebooks.
  • Have working knowledge of software development methodologies and tools (e.g., git, CI/CD).
  • Have excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Can work independently and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

In addition, outstanding candidates will:

  • Have experience with Docker, Conda, and databases (e.g., PostgreSQL)
  • Have relevant certifications or training in data management, data governance, bioinformatics, or related fields.

 

Working plan: The successful candidate will play a crucial role in multiple tasks within the scope of the projects, namely:    

  • Contributing to the development of (meta)data best practices and guidelines for aquatic biodiversity workflows.
  • Analyzing and interpreting large datasets, particularly those generated from high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies.
  • Developing and implementing bioinformatics pipelines using programming languages like R, Python, and Shell/Bash.
  • Contributing to the development and maintenance of bioinformatics infrastructure using tools like git and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Collaborate effectively with researchers and team members to define project goals and deliver results.
  • Thrive and deliver results on goals in a fast-paced, dynamic and highly multi-tasking environment.
  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn new technologies and adapt to new challenges.

    Evaluation of candidates will be performed according to the following criteria:

  • Professional experience (50%)
  • The relevance of academic degree(s) and/or other professional training(s) (20%)
  • Motivation letter (30%)
  • The top-most ranked candidates (with more than 50% at the curricular evaluation) will be selected for an interview. The final rank will be calculated by the weighted average of the interview (40%) and the original ranked mark (60%). The interview will focus on the motivation of the candidate and his/her knowledge of the subject of this call. It may also include a technical discussion and/or technical questions. The jury will not choose any of the candidates if they fail to demonstrate that they are a good fit for the position.

    Applicable legislation: Portuguese Labour Code, approved by Law 7/2009 of February 12, in its current form.

     Workplace: The work will be carried out at the CIBIO-InBIO/BIOPOLIS, in Vairão, Vila do Conde.

     The contract is expected to start on 01/04/2024.

     Monthly remuneration: Level 20 of the Single Salary Table (TRU), approved by Order no. 1553-C/2008 of December 31st, i.e. 1596,51 €

     Jury composition: The Jury will be chaired by Dr. Nuno Fonseca (CIBIO), having as effective members Dr. António Muñoz (CIBIO) and Dr. Filipa Martins (CIBIO).

     Publicity and communication of results: All candidates will be informed by email about the result of their application.
