CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR ONE RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP FOR THE PROJECT “DE-HED – DECOLONISING HIGHER EDUCATION AND ENVISIONING THE EDUCATION DIMENSION”, AT THE CENTRE FOR RESEARCH AND INTERVENTION IN EDUCATION (CIIE) of FPCEUP

 

 

The Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto (FPCEUP) welcomes applications for a research studentship for the project “DE-HED – Decolonising Higher Education and Envisioning the Education Dimension: Towards a comprehensive view” (grant no. 2023.00069.RESTART), funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, IP (FCT), and developed at the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE) of FPCEUP, under the local coordination of Dalila Pinto Coelho.

The DE-HED project aims to deepen debates on the need to decolonise higher education (Decol/HE) through a case study in Portugal with members of the academic community, with the specific aim of: i) offer a problematised account of the visions, tensions and possibilities of decolonisation in public higher education in Portugal, based on a multi-level exploration of factors; and ii) contribute to understanding how education is produced and viewed within Decol/HE discourses, in order to offer useful evidence for advancing decolonial and related transformative perspectives in higher education.

 

1. Research field/Scientific area: Educational Sciences

 

2. Admission requirements:

To apply for the research studentship, applicants must comply with the following requirements, for which documentary evidence must be provided:

  • Hold a Master’s degree in Educational Sciences or in another area of the Social Sciences and Humanities relevant to the development of the project (e.g., Sociology, History…)*.
  • Be enrolled or fulfill the necessary conditions to enroll in a doctoral programme, a requirement to be proven by the contracting act. Alternatively, he/she may be enrolled in a non-academic degree course integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units, a requirement to be proven at the contracting act.
  • Proficient command of Portuguese language (only applicable if the candidate is not a native speaker of Portuguese, in which case he/she must submit a supporting document).
  •  

    * If the candidate holds a Master degree awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognised by a Portuguese higher education institution, following the provisions of article 25 of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16 August, which approves the legal regime for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and Article 4 (2) (e) of Decree-Law no. 60/2018 of 3 August, and any formalities established therein be fulfilled up to the date of the contracting act.

     

    3. Preferred requirements (for which documentary evidence must be provided):

  • Knowledge and experience in using qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.
  • Experience of research work as part of an academic degree or funded research project, using qualitative and/or quantitative methodologies, with the collection and analysis of empirical material, specifying the research tasks in which the candidate was involved (submit a copy of the master's thesis and/or a statement from the project leader).
  • (Co-)authorship of paper presentations and scientific publications in the field of education or other social sciences.
  • Proficient command of the English language (to be demonstrated through the motivation letter in English, in compliance with the line d) of point 12.2., and/or a certificate).
  • Immediate availability (to be mentioned in the motivation letter).
  •  

    4. Work plan:

    The main duties of the successful applicant will include:

  • Supporting research and literature review.
  • Collaborating in the writing of reports and papers in scholarly journals and presenting work at scientific meetings.
  • Collaborating in the organising of project meetings and dissemination events.
  • Assisting in other project management and administrative support tasks and dissemination activities.
  •  

    5. Applicable legislation and regulations:

    Portuguese Law no. 40/2004, dated August 18 (Scientific Research Fellow Statute) in its current wording; Regulation 184/2021 of 3 March, as amended by Resolution no. 1301/2021, published in D.R., 2nd series, on 22 December; Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16th (Legal regime for recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of higher education awarded by foreign higher education institutions); and Code of Administrative Procedure (“Código do Procedimento Administrativo”).

     

    6. Workplace:

    The workplace shall be at CIIE facilities at FPCEUP, Rua Alfredo Allen, 4200-135 Porto or other locations necessary for carrying out of the work plan, under the scientific supervision of Dalila Pinto Coelho.

     

    7. Duration:

    The research studentship has a duration of 6 months, scheduled to start in May 2024. The studentship, on an exclusive basis, might be renewed for equal or different time periods, in accordance with institutional needs and financial availability and within legal and regulatory constraints.

     

    8. Monthly maintenance allowance amount:

    The monthly maintenance allowance is 1.259,64€, according to the table of values of the Research Studentship Regulation of the University of Porto (no. 184/2021) and of the studentships awarded directly by the FCT. Payment will be made by FPCEUP by bank transfer.

    8.2. The studentship holder may join the Voluntary Social Security (valid for a grant contract equal to or greater than 6 months), being optional (not mandatory), and the reimbursement corresponding to the 1st step of the contributory base. The studentship holder will also be covered by personal accident insurance.

     

     

    9. Evaluation methods :

    9.1. Evaluation methods are curricular evaluation (CE) and, if the panel deems it necessary, an interview (I) to the highest ranked candidates (max. of three) in curricular evaluation. The interview (I), if necessary, will weigh 30% of the final score. In case an interview is held, the final score (FS) is calculated according to the formula CE*0,7 + I*0,3, expressed on a scale of 0 to 100 points. If there is no interview, the final score will be the same as the one obtained at CE.

    9.2. The evaluation criteria and weighing factors at CE are as follows:

  • Academic background and experience in research activities, including those related to the theme and methodologies of the project – 50%.
  • Scientific production, including publications (articles in scientific journals, books, chapters in books, or proceedings of scientific meetings) – 20%.
  • Motivation and interest in the subject of the project, as well as relevant previous experience – 30%.
  • 9.3. If the interview is held, it will evaluate:

  • Capacity for expression and verbal fluency in Portuguese and English (40%).
  • Specific knowledge for carrying out the work plan (60%).
  •  

    If the selected candidate withdraws, the highest body of the Faculty reserves the right to call the next candidate and so on until the vacancy is filled in, by judgment of convenience and opportunity, based on the selection reserve list that can be used up to 6 months from the date of this notice, for which purpose a "selection reserve list" is constituted that corresponds to the final ranking list.

    11. Disclosure of the results :

    11.1. Final results will be communicated by email to the address provided by the candidates in the CV

    11.2. Candidates have a period of 10 working days from the 5th working day immediately following the date of this notification sent to their electronic mailbox, in accordance with Article 121 et seq. of the Code of Administrative Procedure, to submit a formal rebuttal.

    11.3. The final decision must be taken within a maximum period of 60 working days after the conclusion of the preliminary hearing of interested parties or of the public consultation.

     

    12. Submission of applications :

    12.1. The call for applications is open until April 23th, 2024.

    12.2. Applications must be submitted exclusively on the FPCEUP website, at the link https://sigarra.up.pt/fpceup/pt/cnt_cand_geral.concursos_list (no 2024/12). The following documents are mandatory:

  • Curriculum vitae (in Portuguese), with full name, address, and e-mail address, detailing previous experience in research projects and other responsibilities and tasks in which he/she has been involved.
  • A copy of the academic degree certificate(s) (and the respective recognition of the academic degree(s), if obtained at a foreign higher education institution - to be provided by the time of recruitment), to prove compliance with the minimum admission requirement indicated in point 2(a) of this notice.
  • Proof of enrolment in a doctoral programme or, alternatively, in a non-degree course as part of the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units, to prove compliance with the minimum admission requirement indicated in point 2(b) of this notice (to be proved by the time of recruitment).
  • Motivation letter in English (max. 1000 words) reflecting the different curriculum evaluation criteria (point 9 of this notice).
  • Declaration of eligibility (please see the attachment to this notice).
  • If the candidate is not a native speaker of Portuguese, a document proving that he/she has the required language skills.
  •  Other documents demonstrating the experience and knowledge indicated in preferred requirements.
  • Any documents that candidates consider relevant to assessing their merit.
  • 12.3. Failure to submit the documents identified in points a) to f) above when applying will result in the administrative exclusion of candidates.

    12.4. Candidates may also attach other documents they consider relevant for curricular evaluation, as well as proof of enrolment in a doctoral programme from a higher education institution and recognition of academic degree (if applicable).

    12.5. The evidence-based documents must be attached directly to the application form, without using links to external platforms/drives. In order to guarantee the reading of all documents, the preferred recording format is Portable Document Format (.pdf).

    RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP CONTRACT

    BETWEEN:

    FIRST: University of Porto, public foundation under private law, legal entity with NIPC 501413197 and NISS 20008871411, through its organic unit, _______ of the University of Porto, with administrative autonomy, headquartered at __________, with NIPC _______, represented in this act by Professor Doctor _________, as Director of the OU of the financing entity, hereinafter referred to as "First Party",

     

    SECOND: _______________ (name), bearer of citizen card No. __________, taxpayer No. __________ and beneficiary of Social Security No. __________, resident in __________, hereinafter referred to as "Second Party",

    Considering that:

    The application requirements for awarding the scholarship under the ____________ competition have been met (identification of the competition / reference of the notice of the opening of the competition), the evaluation process of the candidates and dissemination of the results has been completed and the required documentation has been received.

     

    This research fellowship/science and technology management/ (other) agreement is entered into in good faith, and reciprocally accepted, under the Research Fellowship Statute, approved by Law No. 40/2004, of August 18, in accordance with current stipulations, and governed by the following clauses:

     

    CLAUSE ONE

    The First Party agrees to grant the Second Party a research grant __________, within the scope of the __________ project, beginning on __________, and ending on __________.

     

    CLAUSE TWO

    The Second Party declares to be aware of the FCT Research Scholarship Regulation, as it is subsidiarily applicable.

     

     

     

    CLAUSE THREE

    The Second Party agrees to carry out the work plan attached to this contract, the content of which it declares to have taken full knowledge and understanding, and accepting all conditions without reservations, from the aforementioned start date and on an exclusive dedication basis, pursuant to article 5 of the Research Fellowship Holder's Statute.

     

    CLAUSE FOUR

    The Second Party will carry out the work at __________ of the University of Porto, which functions as a Host Institution, having as Scientific Advisor Professor.  Availability  to start functions from November 1, 2022, to be indicated in the
    motivation letter.

    CLAUSE FIVE

  • The amount of the monthly maintenance allowance awarded is of __________ (amount written in full).
  • The Second Party also benefits from personal accidents insurance during the length of the scholarship, the conditions of which it declares full awareness of and accepts without reservations.
  •  

    CLAUSE SIX

    The First Party may cancel the scholarship and the Second Party is obliged to refund all or part of the amounts received in the following cases:

  • Serious and repeated non-compliance with the duties of the Second Party contained in the Statute of the Research Fellow andthe FCT Research Fellowship Regulation, for reasons attributable to it;
  • Negative evaluation of the Second Party's performance carried out by the supervisor or the host entity under the terms provided for in the FCT Research Scholarship Regulation;
  • Provision of false statements by the Second Party on matters relevant to the granting and renewal of the scholarship or to the appreciation of its development.
  •  

    CLAUSE SEVEN

    Without changes to the provisions of the previous clause, this agreement automatically terminates with:

  • The completion of the activity plan
  •  End of the term for which the scholarship is awarded;
  •  The repeated non-compliance by one of the parties;
  •  Revocation by mutual agreement;
  •  Establishment of a legal-work relationship with the host entity.

    CLAUSE EIGHT

    1. The rights and duties of the parties are those resulting from the provisions of the Research Fellowship Holder Statute.

    2. The Fellow declares to have taken note of the Research Fellow's Statute and the applicable Regulation(s) and commits to observing its provisions.

    CLAUSE NINE

    It is agreed between the parties that in case of need and to resolve any issues arising from this contract, the Court of the District of Porto will have jurisdiction, expressly waiving any other.

     

    CLAUSE TEN

    Any change to be made to the contract in the course of its execution will be subject to prior written agreement.

    CLAUSE ELEVEN

  • This contract takes effect on the date of its signature by both parties.
  • The concrete definition of the activities referred to in the previous paragraph is the responsibility of the First Party, after hearing the Second Party and the Scientific Advisor, and they must be present in the definition of activities as well as when signing the agreement, as stated in the previous clause.
  •  

    CLAUSE TWELVE

  • The Second Party agrees to keep confidential any information of a confidential nature to which it has access during the provision of its work, and to use it only for the purpose of complying with the provisions of this scholarship agreement and for the benefit of the First Party.
  • The Second Party, in the exercise of its functions, is bound by the specific duty of professional secrecy, under the terms and in accordance with the current legislation regarding the protection of personal data, remaining applicable even after the termination, for any reason, of the effects of this scholarship agreement.
  •  

  • The Second Party further acknowledges that all documents containing confidential information are the exclusive property of the First Party, being obliged to keep such documents always properly protected and to return them before the end of the scholarship agreement.
  •  

     

    CLAUSE THIRTEEN

  • The First Party, better identified in this agreement, is responsible for the processing of the second party's personal data.
  • The personal data collected and processed are those strictly necessary for the execution of this scholarship agreement and for compliance with the legal provisions to which the First Party is bound.
  • The processing of this data will be carried out in accordance with the current legislation on the protection of personal data and in accordance with the data protection policy of the University of Porto.
  • The First Party provides the second party with information regarding the processing of its data, in compliance with the principle of lawfulness, loyalty and transparency (attached document that forms an integral part of this contract).
  •  

    CLAUSE FOURTEEN

  • 1. The industrial property rights over the inventions or creations made by the Fellow during the execution of this contract belong to the University of Porto.
  • The University of Porto guarantees, as a general principle, the attribution of copyright to the scholarship holder over literary, scientific and artistic works conceived and made by the Second Party.
  • The exception to the preceding paragraph is in regards to works that have been created at the request of the University or to be published or disseminated on behalf of the University, as the University will be organising and directing their production.
  •  

    This contract is made in duplicate and a copy is intended for each of the grantors, with a copy is sent to the scientific advisor.

    Disclosure of usage of personal data

     

    1. Purpose of data processing

    Personal data is collected for specific, explicit and legitimate purposes, and may not be further processed in a manner incompatible with those purposes.

    In this context, the processing has as its exclusive purpose the management of human resources and fulfilment of obligations and exercise of specific rights of the data manager or the data subject in relation to the applicable legislation, namely social protection, administrative management of the activity, insurance policy subscription and personal accident process management.

     

    2. Lawfulness of data processing
