Offer Description

1. The Board of Directors of esad—idea, research in design and art has decided to open, for a period of 15 working days, counted from the working day im-
mediately following the one in which the present announcement is publicised, a selection procedure for 1 (one) position of Junior Researcher (PhD) to conduct scientific research activities in the scientific area of Arts and Design, or other similar ones such as Architecture, in particular for the purpose of performing research functions within the cultural and scientific activities programme of esad —idea, research in design and art, under an individual work contract with non-fixed term, pursuant to the Portuguese Labour Code.

2. This competition follows the protocol to support the development of R&D activities, agreement between the Foundation for Science and Technology, IP
and esad—idea - association for the promotion of research in design and art, within the Institutional Scientific Employment Stimulus Competition.

3. The project is based on the activity plan presented by esad—idea, research in design and art and approved by FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology. The main points of the activities to be undertaken are the following:

a) Research activities developed within the scope of esad—idea’s research clusters.
b) Support to esad—idea procedures within the scope of FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology processes.
c) Research and curatorial activities, including those associated with the activities of Casa do Design and Porto Design Biennale.

4. Applicable legislation:
a) Decree no 57/2016, of 29 August, amended by Law 57/2017, of 19 July, which approves a legal regime aimed at stimulating scientific and technological employment in all areas of knowledge (RJEC);
b) Portuguese Labour Code, approved by Law No. 7/2009, of 12 February, in its current wording;
c) Regulatory Decree no 11-A / 2017, of 29 December.

5. In accordance with article 13 of the RJEC, the Selection Panel of the competition is composed as follows:

Luis Mota, Adjunct Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo;

6. The workplace is located at esad—idea headquarters, at Avenida Calouste Gulbenkian, s/n, 4460-268 Senhora da Hora, Matosinhos, Portugal, or in other facilities where it carries out research activities.

7. The monthly remuneration to be attributed is that provided for in point a) in paragraph 1 of article 15 of the RJEC, and in article 2 of Regulatory Decree 11-A / 2017, of 29 December, corresponding to level 33 of the single remuneration table, updated under the terms of Decree-Law no. 10/B/31, of 23 March, amounting to 2128.34 euros, namely with the Junior Researcher category.

8. The employment contract for a non-fixed term, under the terms of the Labour Code, is based on the performance of a specific, precisely defined and non-lasting service.

9. The general requirements for admission to the competition are:
a) This competition is open to national candidates, foreigners and stateless persons holding a doctorate degree in Art or Design or related areas, obtained in 2021, 2022 or 2023;
b) The candidate must have a curriculum vitae of scientific and professional experience which presents an adequate profile to the activities to be developed;
c) If the candidate holds a doctorate degree awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of 16 August, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled.

10. Specific criteria are defined below:
a) To have a PhD in Art, Design or related areas;
b) To have proven scientific experience in the field of research in Art, Design or related areas;
c) To speak and write fluently in Portuguese and English;
d) To have participated in research, editing or curatorial projects.

11. Submission of applications and documents required:
a) The application must be submitted electronically to [email protected] and addressed to the Executive Director of esad—idea, with the candidate’s complete name, number and date of the identity card, tax identification number, date of birth, residence and contact address, including e-mail and telephone contact, the message subject must have the reference “PHD RESEARCHER (JUNIOR)| esad—idea”.

The application has to be accompanied by the following documents:
a1) Copy of the PhD certificate or diploma;
a2) Curriculum Vitae, detailed in Ciência Vitae (national candidates), and document organised according to the conditions laid down in numbers 13 and 15 of this notice;
a3) Other relevant documents for the assessment of the knowledge level in related scientific area;
a4) Declaration of interest indicating the motivation for the research area indicated in this announcement;
a5) Other documents that may be relevant to the analysis of the application;
b) After receiving the application, esad—idea will send an electronic confirmation;
c) The application and the documents that form the application are admitted in Portuguese and English;
d) Whenever necessary, the entity and / or the selection panel may request the candidates to present the original documents proving the declarations or documents that form the application.

12. In terms of the article 5 of the RJEC, the selection process consists in assessing the professional and scientific career of the candidates.

13. The professional and scientific career assessment focuses on significance, quality and up-to-date knowledge of:
a) The scientific output of the last five years considered most significant by the candidate;
b) Research, editing, curatorship, project and artistic activities developed in the last five years and considered by the candidate to have the
greatest repercussions;
c) The extension and dissemination of knowledge activities developed in the last five years, namely in the context of the promotion of culture and scientific practices, considered most relevant by the candidate.

14. The five-year period referred to in the previous number may be extended by the selection panel, at the request of the candidate, on the grounds of sus-
pension of the scientific activity for socially protected reasons, namely due to parental leave, prolonged serious illness, and other situations of unavailability for work protected by law, as long as the candidate produces a valid document to prove the before mentioned situations.

15. The professional and scientific career assessment criteria are:
a) Curriculum Vitae (90%):
a1) List of scientific publications (15%);
a2) Project activity in art, design or related areas, and artistic activity (40%);
a3) Participation in research projects (15%);
a4) Research experience relevant in art, design or related areas (20%).
b) Letter of motivation specifying the interest and motivation for the research area (10%).
c) In the event of a tie between candidates, interviews will be conducted with those involved, in person or online, to determine the first ranked candidate.

16. The criteria and considerations will be published on the ESAD website, in an area dedicated to the competition.

17. The assessment criteria is expressed on a scale of 0 to 100 points.

18. The Selection Panel shall deliberate by means of a nominal vote based on the adopted and published selection criteria, and abstentions are not allowed.

19. Minutes of the Selection Panel meetings will be taken, with a summary of what has occurred in the meetings and the votes cast by each of the members, as well as the respective reasoning. These minutes can be provided to the candidates whenever requested.

20. After applying the selection criteria, a ranked list of candidates is produced by the Selection Panel. Candidates are ranked in descending order of the obtained points.

21. The Selection Panel final decision is approved by the Executive Director of esad—idea, who is also responsible for making the contract.

22. Candidates, who do not comply with the application deadline or formalise the application incorrectly, will be excluded from the competition. The exclusion will be communicated by email and the interested parties may request a hearing.

23. False statements provided by the candidates shall be punished by law.

24. The list of admitted and excluded candidates, as well as the final ranking list, will be published on ESAD’s website (www.esad.pt ). Candidates will be notified by email and the interested parties may request a hearing.

25. After the preliminary results (or list) being published, candidates have 5 (five) working days to respond immediately after publication date.

26. After having heard the interested parties, the Selection Panel will analyse the candidates’ justifications and approve the final ranking list and final decision.

27. This notice is also published:
a) On the Euraxess;
b) On the Escola Superior de Artes e Design website;
c) In a national newspaper.

28. This competition is exclusively destined to fill the announced vacancy and can be terminated at any time until approval of final candidate list.
