We are offering a Post-Doctoral Research Grant (BPD) (Reference BIOPOLIS 2024-08) in the
scope of the project “Khointact: Towards a better understanding of contact relations between
southern African Khoisan languages of the Kx'a, Tuu and Khoe-Kwadi families”, with the
reference FCT 2022.06259.PTDC, granted by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia-
I.P./MCTES through national fundings (PIDDAC), to wort at CIBIO-InBIO/Associação
BIOPOLIS on the description and quantification of the contact between the Kx’a, Tuu and Khoe-
Kwadi language families of Southern Africa. The work tasks will focus on transferring newly
collected linguistic data, from poorly documented Kalahari Khoe languages of Botswana, into a
cross-linguistic database and assign cognates. The BPD holder will further participate in several
analytical tasks in comparative linguistics, as well as in reporting activities and results
dissemination.
Main Research Field: Linguistics.
Admission Requirements: Candidates are applicable if they received their PhD degree less than
3 (three) years ago and, at the starting date of the new contract, have not completed 36 (thirtysix)
months as Post-Doctoral fellows. Applicants should preferably have previous experience in
the documentation and description of Southern African languages. We are looking for candidates
with:
1. Experience in research activities in the field of language documentation;
2. Experience in historical linguistics;
3. Previous experience with languages of the Khoe-Kwadi family;
4. Fluency in English;
5. Good communication skills;
6. Ability to work well within a team and to possess troubleshooting and problem-solving
skills.
The candidate must present a curriculum compatible with the work plan.
Working Plan: Within the scope of the workplan, the candidate will develop the following
tasks:
1. Transcribe newly collected data from the Kalahari Khoe languages Khwe, Shua, Ts’ixa
and ǁAni and assemble them into a database;
2. Integrate the collected data in a cross-linguistic database previously developed within the
project;
3. Analyze the data according to state-of-the art scholarly standards;
4. Work on a description of the language in a comparative framework;
5. Support reporting activities and result dissemination;
6. Attend project meetings;
7. Scientific articles writing.
Applicable Legislation: Law n. 40/2004, from 18th August (Research Fellow Statute) amended
and republished by the Decree-law n. 123/2019, from 28th August; FCT Regulation for Research
Studentships and Fellowships (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt ).
Work Place: The work will primarily be carried out at the CIBIO-InBIO/Associação
BIOPOLIS pole at Vairão, Vila do Conde.
Grant Duration: 7 (seven) months
Monthly Stipend: The monthly stipend is €1,741.00 (one thousand seven hundred and fourty
one euros) according to the stipend’s values established by the FCT-I.P., in Portugal
(https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_202… ). The
payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The chosen candidate will also be
entitled to the reimbursement of the Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and to
a work insurance.
Expect Starting Date: 1st of March 2024
Selection Criteria: Candidate’s assessment will be made in accordance with the admission
requirements (see above) and will be based on:
1. The relevance of previous experience with southern African languages (70%);
2. The quality of the curriculum vitae (20%);
3. The analysis of a motivation letter (10%).
The jury may not award the grant if the quality of the candidates is inferior to that intended.
In the case of admitted candidates whose evaluation does not differ more than 10% from that
obtained by the best positioned candidate, the jury will interview these candidates. This
interview will aim to obtain clarifications about the curricular elements and additional
information, as well as to evaluate the attitude profile and motivation of the candidate. The final
score of each jury member is obtained by the following assessment: 90% of the scientific and
curricular career evaluation and 10% of the interview.
Jury Composition: The Jury will be chaired by Anne-Maria Fehn, PhD (CIBIO), having as
effective members Jorge Rocha, PhD (CIBIO) and Alexander Andrason, PhD (University of
Cape Town/Living Tongues Institute).
Publication and Communication of the Results: The ranking of applications will be published
at a visible and public area of Institution facilities, and all candidates will be informed by email
about the result of their application.
