                                             Main research field: Biological Sciences

Sub research field: Human Population Genetics

1. Associação BIOPOLIS opens an international call for an Assistant Researcher, under a non-fixed term work contract with a maximum duration of 6 years. This announcement is intended to 1 (one) research position (Reference BIOPOLIS 2024-10) to pursue scientific research activities in the project UIDB/50027/2020 Rede de Investigação em Biodiversidade e Biologia Evolutiva), supported by national funds by FCT/MCTES, in the main research field of human population genetics. The chosen candidate will be integrated in the Human Evolutionary Genetics group and have immediate access to a large corpus of unpublished genomic data from southern Africa which is based on a unique set of samples collected by group members in situ. The data is to be analysed following state-of-the-art procedures from population genetics and bioinformatics, including innovative use and, if applicable, development of software solutions. While the group’s current interests are focused on population history research, the data may also be used in research endeavours aiming for the study of single genes or adaptative traits, according to the interests of the applicant. The position further includes curation of the group’s large sample collection, and laboratory procession of newly collected samples. Candidates will find an open and encouraging atmosphere in which they can follow and develop their own research interests. In this context, they are expected to write projects and apply for funding at regular intervals. They will also be involved in the diffusion of results at international conferences, and in the preparation of manuscripts, including the writing process of any paper published within the frame of the group’s collaborative work. All applicants are therefore expected to have an excellent command of both spoken and written English, in order to keep up with these demands.

Within the frame of BIOPOLIS-CIBIO’s advanced training programs – a MSc in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution, and the PhD program BIODIV – the successful candidate is further expected to participate in the recruitment and supervision of students, including active assistance in the drafting of funding proposals.
