The Centre for Social Studies (CES) – Associate Laboratory - University of Coimbra (Portugal), opens a call for applications for one (1) assistant researcher - Part-time (CES/08/2024-TRANSLighthouses) in the project TRANS-lighthouses | More than green - Lighthouses of transformative nature-based solutions for inclusive communities (Grant Agreement 101084628), funded by the European Commission, and coordinated by Isabel Ferreira.

CES provides a stimulating intellectual environment in the domain of social sciences and humanities. The TRANS-lighthouses projects have been developed within the scope of the Thematic Line Urban Cultures, sociabilities and participation. (https://www.ces.uc.pt/pt/ces/linhas/culturs ).

a. Project Description:

TRANS-lighthouses aims to gather evidence on material and immaterial results of NBS in order to rethink and reframe the main elements that compose the complexity of creating social and ecologically just NBS. Constituting a well-oiled network of citizens, local governments, scientific institutions and civil society-based partners which acts across borders, disciplines and sectors, TRANS-lighthouses will lead research on activities aiming to implement socioeconomic and political changes capable of enabling pathways for a socially and ecologically just implementation of NBS. TRANS-lighthouses integrates a network of NBS lighthouses for urban, rural, coastal and forested areas in 10 EU countries and 6 non-EU.Expected duration of project execution: 42 months, starting May 1, 2023.

c. Work plan:

The selected candidate is expected to contribute and support the coordination team with the implementation of TRANS-lighthouses' Work Package 6 - Community-based communication and citizen science, particularly task 6.3, whose objectives are:

- To promote citizen engagement in the co-creation (co-diagnostic, co-design, co-implementation and co-monitoring) of nature-based solutions, based on improved communication and interaction with citizens and communities;

- To better communicate the nature-based solutions science, supporting citizens’ local knowledges and enhancing mutual trust;

- To contribute to the refinement of the nature-based solutions approach based on citizen science.

More specifically, s/he will contribute to:

- task 6.3 - “Fine tuning of participatory methods”, which is led by CES and requires collaborative work with co-leading partner and participants of the task, as well as connecting with tasks from other work packages.

- during the implementation of the activities foreseen in task 6.3, specific contributions will be made to the tasks: 6.2 - “Approaches and pathways to social mobilisation and citizen engagement for NBS”; feedback the reflexive monitoring process of task 6.1 “Citizen science framework and resources on NBS”; collaborative work with leading partners and participants of tasks 6.4 “Design of community-driven communication process based on youth protagonism” and 6.5 “Digital and low-tech tools building to support participatory assessment and data usability”; consultations made to the participants of WP6 in relation to communication and dissemination, as devised in task 1.5 of work package 1 and in task 5.5 of work package 5.

d. Applicable Legislation and Regulations:

The hiring will also be governed by the Portuguese Labour Code approved by Law no.7/2009 of February 12, as currently worded.

e. Work place:

The tasks will be performed at the Centre for Social Studies facilities in Coimbra or other locations when necessary for the good implementation of the work plan, under the supervision of the Project’s PI, Isabel Ferreira.

f. Duration of the contract:

A temporary contract (“termo incerto”), part-time, will be signed for the sole purpose of the execution of the project. The total duration of which may not exceed four years (Clause 5, Article 148 of the Labour Code), and will automatically end with the completion of the activities provided for in the activity plan. Moreover, according to Article 112 of the Labour Code, paragraph 2 a), a trial period of 30 days is established. If the selected candidate does not meet all the conditions to start the contract within the defined period: 1 – the duration of the contract can be reduced; 2 – the contract can be assigned to the applicant classified in the next position; or 3 – the position may not be awarded.

h. Application process:

Applications must include:

a) Presentation/Motivation letter in English demonstrating experience in project management and the type of activities carried out (max. 2 pages);

b) Full Curriculum Vitae;

c) Copy of qualification certificates and other relevant documents for eligibility purposes. If, for the duration of the applications period, the applicant does not have proof of recognition of the academic degree by the Portuguese Higher Education System (Law DL66/2018), it must be sent a declaration of honour ensuring to deliver the recognition of the degree within 30 days after the communication of the results, if selected.

Skills/Qualifications

i. Preferred selection criteria and corresponding weight:

1. Previous experience in citizen science, community-based communication and science communication, within international and EU Research projects (40%);

2. Previous experience in supporting research-oriented projects, preferably within social sciences and humanities fields (20%);

3. Knowledge of preparing technical reports, archiving and organising information (10%)

4. Fluency in Portuguese and English (10%).

5. Strong organisational skills, including the ability to manage priorities and tight deadlines

(10%);

6. Availability to national and international travelling (5%);

7. Interest in pursuing advanced studies in the fields of the research project (5%).

 

K. Mandatory requirements:

Applicants with an academic degree and diploma issued by a foreign Higher Education Institution must present proof of recognition of the academic degree by the Portuguese Higher Education System, (law DL66/2018). Any candidate without the recognition of the degree(s) will be admitted to the competition, but during the evaluation process the selection panel, cannot:

i) recognise the candidate's grades and assess according to the possession of such grades;

ii) give equivalence to, or validate, the grade of her/his degree;

iii) use that note or its conversion as an evaluation parameter.

In case of selection, the contract can only be signed after the recognition of the academic degree by the Portuguese authorities, under the terms of the Law-decree n66/2018, August 16. The selected candidate must deliver the recognition of the degree within 30 days after the communication of the results. After the 30 days, the jury may decide to 1. either extend the deadline for the candidate to prove the recognition; 2. assign the fellowship to the second place; 3. or not award the position.

The monthly salary for the Part-time, corresponding to 17.5 hours a week, will be 889.17 Euros gross (plus months 13 and 14), meal allowance, and all social security charges, in accordance with the Portuguese Labour Code.

Selection process

l. Selection process

The selection of the candidate will be made based on the curricular evaluation and, in case of a tie among the best candidates, interviews will be carried out in person or remotely. When applying the two methods of selection, curricular evaluation and interview, each will have a valuation of 50% in the final classification.

In the interview, in order to clarify aspects related to the curriculum and previous experience, the candidate's ability to integrate into the project, motivation and interest, and communication and verbal expression in English will be evaluated.

The jury reserves the right to not select any applicants for the positions, if applications do not meet the necessary standards and/or profiles in terms of absolute merit.
