Offer Description

1 (one) Research Fellowship (BI) for a Master enrolled in a non-degree course

1 Research Fellowship(s) (BI) is(are) open at the FCiências.ID – Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências, for the project “Mars Winds and Wave Mapping - MWWM”, financed by European Space Agency, under the following conditions:

1.                   Scientific Area: Astronomy and Astrophysics or Geography

2.                   Requirements for admission:  Master degree completed.

3.                   Additional optional skills and qualifications: Experience in digital topographic models (DTM) on Mars and mineralogical studies on Mars using hyperspectral cameras.

4.                   Contracting requirements: Presentation of the academic qualifications and/or diplomas. Enrolment in   non-degree course developed in association or cooperation between a High Education Institution and one or multiple research units.

5.                    Work plan:
• Identify and characterize morphological evidence associated with fluvio-marine environments on Mars (using Mars Express wide planetary map).
• Use OMEGA spectra datasets from Mars Express and CRISM/MRO as well, to detect and characterize specific minerals in old fluvio-marine systems on Mars surface. The methodology proposed is based in the diverse reflectance properties of the minerals we intend to study. Spectroscopic analyses will be implemented on the selected datasets.
• Explore the possibility of using Exomars TGO (Trace Gas Orbiter) CASSIS instrument to also perform reflectance studies of minerals on Mars.
• Use Mars Express (MEx) archive PSA and HRSC instrument archive (https://sci.esa.int/web/mars-express/-/42773 second mars express data workshop) to constrain and characterize possible Martian old shorelines of Ocean Borealis (northern hemisphere).
• Build Digital Topographic Maps (DTM) os Martian selected areas using stereo cameras data from: HRSC, HIRISE and CTX. The mineralogical studies will integrate the topographic knowledge of the selected regions, the state-of-the-art information about the atmosphere lower layers and local radiative transfer, and the spectral mineralogical reflectance "finger print" as well.
Objectives: perform two-fold studies on selected Martian regions: DTM of the selected areas and mineralogic studies of the same areas using reflectance methods and hyperspectral data.

6.                   Legislation framework: Research Fellowship Holder Statute, in accordance with Law 40/2004, of 18 August, in its current version and the FCT Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships, in its current version  (Reg. 950/2019 published in DR on 16th  December: https://dre.pt/application/file/a/127230968 ,  or at the FCT website: https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt ), and FCiências.ID Fellowship Regulation, as approved on 12th May 2020 (available at Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação Científica da FCiências.ID ).
