Application for 2 Master Fellowships within the scope of the
PRR project entitled “Pacto da Bioeconomia Azul”

Applications are invited for 2 Master Fellowships in the scope of the PRR project entitled “Vertical Algae”, Subproject 3-High Value: Development of innovative and high-value applications for the Nutraceutical and Cosmeceutical markets, funded by Plano de Recuperação e Resiliência - Agendas/Alianças mobilizadoras para a reindustrialização.

Scientific Area: Biology; Biochemistry
Academic degree: Master in Marine Biology, Biochemistry or related field; final grade must be equal to or greater than 18 values
Other requisites:
-    More than 1.5 years of laboratory experience;
-    Experience handling marine microorganisms and/or filamentous fungi, namely isolation and characterization (phenotypic and molecular);
-    Experience in chemical extraction methods, sample preparation and data analysis of analytical techniques (HPLC, GC-MS);
-    Experience in biotransformation assays, and large scale production;
-    Experience in analysing data from multi-omics experiments (metabolomics, genomics);
-    Motivation and proactivity, ability to solve problems in a multidisciplinary environment;
-    Immediate availability;
-    Being enrolled in a PhD, or in a non-academic degree course, in accordance with the Article 6th of gulations for Research Fellowships from Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., law in force.

Working Plan: The work plan is part of a project that aims at developing new antimicrobial therapies focused on bioactive compounds extracted from macroalgae. The fellows will receive training in extraction methodologies and evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of these extracts. The fellows will provide technical support to the team, namely in the characterization and purification of final products resulting from the extraction of natural compounds using chromatographic techniques (e.g. HPLC) gaseous and/or liquid (GC/LC) coupled or not to spectroscopy (profile 1) and in the characterization of the mode of action of the bioactive compounds (profile 2).

Working Place: The work will be carried out in the Applied and Environmental Mycology group at ITQB NOVA, under supervision of Professor Cristina Silva Pereira.

Duration of the fellowship: Each fellowship will have the duration of 12 months, eventually renewable, during the implementation of the project, expected to start in the 1st of March 2024, on a full-time basis, according to according to Fellowship Regulations of Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P.

Stipend amount: The amount of the grant corresponds to 1 199,64 €, according to the table of values of grants awarded directly by the FCT, I.P. in the Country (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_202… ) and payment will be made, monthly, through bank transfer.

Selection procedure: The evaluation procedures the following: curricular evaluation and eventual interview, which, if carried out, will have a valuation of 50%.
