Application for a Bolsa de Iniciação Científica (BIC)
within the ICV4831- PUNA BIO CORPARATION

Applications are invited for a Bolsa de Iniciação Científica (BII) in the scope of the project entitled “New layered system for bioformulations” with the ICV4831- PUNA BIO CORPARATION.

Scientific Area: Agricultural Sciences.

Academic degree: Enrolled in a degree in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or similar areas.

Other requisites to demonstrate:
- Basic knowledge in microbial population analysis, including isolation and identification of microorganisms, and analysis of complex samples;
- Experience in soil microbiology and/or plant-microbe interactions;
- Experience with microbial cultures, including purification, glycerol preparing and collection managing;
- Will be appreciated any experience with molecular biology, biochemistry and phenotyping skills, both with plant and microbes, will be highly valued;
- Experience with bioformulation design and testing;
- Manage greenhouse tests, as well as general plant science methodologies;
- Fluency in English.

Working Plan: The objective of this project is to characterize the suitability of a new bioformulation to enhance the efficiency of a bioinoculant. This work will be divided in three phases: the first will include the preparing and testing of different compounds to perform a stable matrix and the layering system. In the second phase, the bacteria will be added to the formulation and different quality minimal should be achieved: survival rate, storage frame time, viability of the cells... These features will be quantified and optimized in case. For the third phase, the best prototypes will be tested in plants to compare to classic inoculation carriers, and we will evaluate the efficiency, applying corrections in case.

Working Place: The work will be carried out in the iPlantMicro Lab at ITQB NOVA, under supervision of Doctor Juan Ignacio Vílchez.

Duration of the fellowship: The fellowship will have the duration of 6 months, expected to start in February 2024, on a full-time basis, according to Fellowship Regulations of Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P.

Stipend amount: 541,12 €, according to the table of values of grants awarded directly by the FCT, I.P. in the Country (www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_2023.pdf ) and payment will be made, monthly, through bank transfer.

Selection procedure: The evaluation procedures will be based on the analysis of the candidates´ CV and if needed an interview for the selected candidates may take place. In this case, the curriculum evaluation and the interview will have a weight of 80% and 20% each.

Jury composition: Doctor Juan Ignacio Vílchez (president), Doctor Ruben Vicente, and Doctor Tiago Lourenço. As substitute member, Professor Margarida Oliveira.

Notification of candidates: All the candidates will be informed of the final result by e-mail.

Deadlines and procedures for complaints and appeals: If the result is not favorable, the candidates have a period of 10 working days, after the disclosure of the results, to comment, if desired, in a prior hearing of interested parties, in the terms provided for in the Code of Administrative Procedure.
