We invite applications for a research adjunct position (postdoctoral research equivalent) at the Astronomical Observatory, University of Warsaw, Poland, in an ERC grant "Long Secondary Periods in Pulsating Red Giants - Traces of Exoplanets?". The successful applicant will work on photometric time-series data from the OGLE project. The main tasks include creating variable star catalogues of Long Period Variables followed by the statistical analysis of the sample.

Requirements:

- PhD in astronomy/astrophysics received during the last 7 years

- documented research experience in analysis of photometric time-series, especially variable star research, such as light curve classification and analysis, as well as the statistical analysis of variable star catalogues (previous experience with Long Period Variables would be welcome)

- good programming and data-visualisation skills

- experience with the analysis of large data-sets

- experience with Linux operating systems

- good publication record in variable star astrophysics

- fluency in written and spoken English

 

Key responsibilities:

The successful applicant will work creating an analysing the variable star catalogs of Long Period Variables in the OGLE data. The analysis requires handling large photometric data-sets within the Linux environment and experience with variable star classification. Research tasks also involve usage of other publicly available photometric and spectroscopic catalogs and the statistical analysis of the resulting multi-data sample of LPVs.

Benefits

The position is for 2 years with a possible extension to 3 years. The starting date is early 2024. The job location is the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw (Aleje Ujazdowskie 4, 00-478 Warsaw, Poland). Standard benefits under Polish labor law apply.
