Offer Description

Since the initial observation of soil seed banks by Charles Darwin, it is clear that part of plants' successful survival mechanism is the entrance of some but not all seeds produced by the mother into a dormant state. This ensures that when faced with an unpredictable environment plants spread the timing of germination, hedging their bets. This is at least partially achieved by the production of seeds with varying dormancy strength. Although initially described many years ago the phenomena of seed dormancy bet-hedging have not been extensively studied. Here we will use a variety of methods, to investigate the molecular, physiological and evolutionary aspects of seed dormancy bet-hedging in plants. This project combines open-end approaches to look for highly variable genes between individual seeds by single-seed-RNA-sequencing with a single gene-centred approach including single-molecule RNA FISH analysis.
