The International Institute of Molecular Mechanisms and Machines (IMol) Polish Academy of Sciences, was constituted in December 2020, in partnership with University Medical Center Göttingen, Germany and University of Warsaw, Poland.

IMol has been established to conduct scientific research and provide training in the fields of biological, chemical, medical, biotechnological, bioinformatics, biophysical, pharmacological, and similar sciences, in the international environment conducive to collaborative efforts, research and development interactions with biotechnological industry, and wide dissemination of our results.

Currently IMol is seeking for highly motivated candidates for a position of:

POSTDOC in OPUS 18 project – Prof. Agnieszka Chacińska, PhD

A few words about the research group:

Laboratory of Mitochondrial Biogenesis led by Prof. Agnieszka Chacińska is a research group with an excellent publication record in molecular cell biology. We are interested in fundamental cellular mechanisms in physiology as well as in pathology and ageing. Our research is focused on mechanisms of protein import to mitochondria and on the cellular response to dysfunction of these mechanisms. We use diverse model systems such as human cells, yeast, fish Danio rerio and worm Caenorhabditis elegans.

Project leader: Prof. Agnieszka Chacińska, PhD

Project title: “Molecular mechanisms modulating the function of UCH-L1 deubiquitinase in human mitochondria”

Project description: Ubiquitin Proteasome System (UPS) is involved in quality control of mitochondrial proteome. Ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase isozyme L1 (UCH-L1), a part of the UPS, is associated with neurodegeneration in Parkinson and Alzheimer diseases, which also share an involvement of mitochondria in their etiology. The aim of this project is to explore molecular mechanisms of UCH-L1 function as well as its implication in the mitochondria linked neurodegeneration.

Description of your tasks:
  • Performing experiments using biochemical, cell and molecular biology techniques (independently and in collaboration with other team members)
  • Designing experiments and analysing data
  • Writing manuscripts
  • Participation in supervision of MSc and PhD students
  • Participation in preparation of grant applications
  • Active participation in lab meetings, scientific seminars and conferences
