Requirements

The selection procedure is open to all individuals, who meet the requirements set out in Articles 113 and 116.2.3 of the Act of 20 July 2018 – Law on Higher Education and Science, and who meet the following eligibility criteria according to § 165 of the Statute of the Jagiellonian University:

  • holding at least a doctoral degree;
  • having attained relevant scientific achievements;
  • taking an active part in the scientific community.

An ideal candidate will:

  • be highly motivated and with knowledge and experience of either plant physiology, ecophysiology, molecular biology, botany, or photobiology (required);
  • have experience working in a laboratory or field research  (required)
  • have experience investigating plant photosynthetic processes (PAM) (desirable)
  • have the physical fitness for working in high mountains (required)
  • have a Category B driving license (desirable)
  • have scientific education in the discipline of biological, agricultural, or forestry sciences.
  • have a strong report of scientific publication including at least one lead-author publication in a reputable indexed peer-reviewed scientific journal (required);
  • demonstrate self-motivation to establish their own line of research and pursue a scientific career; (required)
  • be able to work well together with colleagues and collaborators as part of the team, to create an atmosphere of trust and respect; (required)
  • have good presentation and communication skills in spoken and written English; (required)
  • fulfill requirements stemming from Regulations on awarding funding for research tasks funded by the National Science Centre as regards research projects , including:
  • having obtained a doctoral degree in the year of employment in the project or within the period of 7 years before January 1, 2024. (This period may be extended by the time spent on long-term (over 90 days) documented sickness benefits or rehabilitation benefits due to incapacity for work. In addition, this period may be extended by the number of months of leave related to the care and upbringing of children granted on the terms set out in the Labour Law, and in the case of women - by 18 months for each child born or adopted, if this method of indicating breaks in the scientific career is more favourable.),
  • having obtained a doctoral degree in an entity other than Jagiellonian University, or fulfilling additional requirements stated by NCN
  • Project Title

    Opus-25: The balance between blue light and UV-A radiation in the control of chloroplast movements

    Project description

    The selected candidate will work on a project financed by the National Science Centre, the aim of which is to investigate the long- and short-term effects of UV radiation on chloroplast movements in model and wild species. Long-term effects tested will include changes in leaf morphology and anatomy, and the concentration of UV-absorbing compounds in leaf tissue. Short-term studies will focus on detailed characterization of chloroplast movements in response to shortwave radiation. The second part of the project is devoted to plant adaptations in the context of chloroplast movements along an altitudinal gradient of UV radiation in the Tatra Mountains; especially in the range of 700-2000 m above sea level. Species with a wide ecological range, capable of growing in the lower montane and alpine zones, as well as species of rock communities differing in exposure to UV radiation, will be examined. The selected candidate will work in Dr. Justyna Łabuz’s team at the Photobiology Laboratory located at the Małopolska Center of Biotechnology in Krakow, Poland

    Scope of duties

    according to the Work Regulations of the Jagiellonian University Annex 1 to the Work Regulations of the Jagiellonian University – Model scopes of responsibilities and duties of academic teachers.

    The candidate's duties will be as follows:

    • planning and executing the experiments carried out as part of the project;
    • collecting and drawing conclusions from the data obtained as part of publishable manuscripts that advance the field, and allow further experiments to be planned;
    • mentoring less-experienced members of the project team, including M.Sc. and Ph.D. students
    • Contributing to other research carried out in the group that falls within their expertise, as well as being an active and constructive member of the project team;
    • supervising the daily work of technicians and working with the PI in the preparation of figures and manuscripts for publication.
