Offer Description

We are seeking a candidate for the position of assistant professor (Postdoc) at the Department of Developmental Biology and Invertebrate Morphology of Jagiellonian University. The hired person will join a dynamic international team researching the diversity and evolution of insect symbiotic microorganisms, combining high-throughput next-generation sequencing (NGS) and microscopic techniques.

The proposed project aims to understand the factors and processes shaping the variability of the insect microbiome. The person employed in this position will be responsible for bioinformatics analyzes of NGS data (genome assembly and characterization, comparative analysis of symbiont genomes, phylogenomic analyses). Depending on their interests, it will also be possible to get involved in research on other aspects of insect symbiosis using a wider range of approaches (fieldwork, microscopy). The task of the employed person will also be to prepare publications and present the results at international conferences.

Essential requirements:

- Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or a related field

- Documented experience with molecular biology techniques

- Documented experience with NGS data analysis

- Documented experience with phylogenetic analyses

- Fluency in English

Additional criteria taken into account:

-Documented research interests and scientific achievements related to the planned project, for example, regarding the insect biology; diversity, biology and evolution of insect-microbe interactions; microbiome surveys; comparative microbial genomics, and phylogenomics; insect phylogeny

-Knowledge of the Linux / Unix shell

-Knowledge of scripting languages (Python / Perl / R)

-Willingness to participate in international research travel

-Favourable opinions of current or recent scientific supervisors about the candidate’s abilities and predisposition for scientific work
