announces a competition for the employment of outstanding young scientists for the position

assistant professor in a group of research employees

as part of the Excellence Initiative - Research University programme

Job description:

  • application for the employment can be submitted by candidates who:
    • hold a degree of doctor, obtained less than 7 years ago,
    • have not been employees of the Silesian University of Technology (SUT) in the last two years,
    • conduct research in at least one of the below mentioned scientific disciplines and have a Hirsch index equal or higher – according to Scopus database:
    • architecture and urban planning – Hirsch index 3;
    • automation, electronic and electrical engineering – Hirsch index 10;
    • information and communication technology – Hirsch index 10;
    • biomedical engineering – Hirsch index 12;
    • chemical engineering – Hirsch index 17;
    • civil engineering and transport – Hirsch index 8;
    • materials engineering- Hirsch index 10;
    • mechanical engineering – Hirsch index 10;
    • environmental engineering, mining and energy – Hirsch index 10;
    • chemical sciences – Hirsch index 15;
    • Earth and related environmental sciences – Hirsch index 15;
    • management and quality studies – Hirsch index 5.
  • estimated work commencement date: April/June 2021,
  • workplace and type of contract: Silesian University of Technology, fixed-term contact, full-time contract,
  • period of employment: 12 months, with the possibility of extension for another 12 months, and also for the next period, in the case of obtaining financing of employment costs from external sources,
  • number of vacancies: 3.
  • Tasks:

  • scientific activity in one of the priority research areas established at the University described in detail on the University's website at: https://www.polsl.pl/en/Conferences/idub/Pages/pob_all.aspx
  • computational oncology and personalized medicine,
  • artificial intelligence and data processing,
  • materials of the future,
  • smart cities and future mobility,
  • process automation and Industry 4.0,
  • climate and environmental protection, modern energy;
  • development of cooperation with internationally renowned scientific institutions,
  • publishing scientific articles in the top journals – at least from the TOP10[1] list,
  • obtaining research projects in national programmes and in European Commission funded Horizon programmes.
  • Requirements:

  • doctoral degree,
  • publishing in the last 5 years at least 5 articles in the TOP104 scientific journals,
  • participating in the last 5 years in the implementation of at least one project of the National Science Centre (NCN)/Foundation for Polish Science (FNP)/National Centre for Research and Development (NCBiR) / European Commission funded Horizon projects or projects in prestigious international programmes and managing at least one of them,
  • membership in a recognized association, international scientific organization or academy.
  • Additional requirements:

  • declaration of submitting, within 12 months from the date of employment, as a manager an application for implementation of a national project of the NCN / FNP / NCBiR, and as a coordinator or team leader of the Silesian University of Technology, an application for the implementation of European Commission funded Horizon project,
  • declaration of submission, within 12 months of the date of employment, at least 2 publications in TOP10 journals,
  • declaration that during the employment period under the Excellence Initiative - Research University programme the SUT will be the primary place of work,
  • affiliating all scientific achievements to the SUT (in justified cases a second affiliation to a foreign or Polish institution is also allowed), and granting consent for the SUT to indicate all achievements obtained/published or submitted during the employment period for the purposes of evaluating scientific activities,
  • providing work directly at the university for at least 1/2 of the employment period, with at least two months per semester.
  • Required documents:

  • motivation letter,
  • curriculum vitae,
  • documents and statements confirming the fulfilment of general and additional requirements,
  • a detailed record of scientific achievements, including managed projects funded from external resources, for the last 5 years,
  • itemized summary of the overall scientific achievements,
  • reference letter from the researcher(s) from abroad,
  • an individual plan for a period of 24 months with a schedule of its implementation, taking into account description of the research area and a way of its implementation at the SUT, as well as planned (select appropriate): scientific publications (articles, monographs), patents, collaborative projects, competitive projects, applications for intellectual property rights, practical applications, establishing a spin-off or spin-out company, acting as editor-in-chief, managing editor, technical or section editor of a scientific journal, internships at prestigious foreign universities or research institutes, activities in prestigious scientific associations and managing organising or scientific committees of prestigious international conferences, seminars or contests.
  • The University offers

  • the possibility of obtaining financing for internships, conferences, purchases of scientific equipment as part of many implemented pro-quality programmes.
  • Expected amount of remuneration:

    Monthly basic salary: 8500.00 PLN gross + “thirteenth salary” bonus + social package

    The possibility of a significant increase in remuneration due to participation in numerous pro-quality programs, i.e.:

    • by PLN 10,000[2] gross per month for 12 months for each publication in the main issue of Nature or Science,
    • by PLN 3,5005 gross per month for 12 months for each publication in the journal from the TOP1 list,
    • by PLN 1,5005 gross per month for 12 months for each publication in the journal from the TOP10 list,
    • by PLN 80006 gross in the form of scholarship for a publication published in cooperation with an author representing a foreign research centre or a non-academic partner,
    • by PLN 10,000[3] in the form of scholarship in the case of commencing the implementation of the Horizon 2020 or Horizon Europa project as a coordinator for the duration of the project + remuneration from the project,
    • by PLN 4,0006 in the form of scholarship in the case of commencing the implementation of the Horizon 2020 or Horizon Europa project as a partner for the duration of the project + remuneration from the project,
    • by PLN 1,500 a month in the case of employing a foreign employee for the project he/she manages for the duration of the project,
    • PLN 10,000 as a grant for obtaining a PhD student from abroad as part of a joint doctorate programme.

    The application must be submitted:

    • the expected date of the competition results: (within 90 days of its announcement).

    Candidates will be notified of the results of the competition within 7 days of its settlement.

    Planned starting date of employment: April/June 2021.

    The final decision on employment depends on the recognition of the academic degree obtained abroad, in particular on the basis of the nostrification procedure applied for by the candidate.

    Candidates negatively evaluated by the selection committee or not selected for employment have the right to appeal against the results of the competition. The appeal shall be submitted to the Rector within

    7 days from the date of notification.

    Incomplete or late offers will not be considered.
