Offer Description

The research topics will be related to the implementation of the project: “Development of a microfluidic model of the blood-brain barrier to study changes in its permeability using electroporation - a new tool for assessing the effectiveness of therapeutic procedures used in neurodegenerative diseases”. In vitro models obtained using microfluidic systems can be a useful tool in examining changes in the permeability of the blood-brain barrier, because it is quite easy to obtain a microenvironment in them that mimic in vivo conditions. Additionally, application of microsystems in in vitro research allow to eliminate variable conditions, that occur during animal research. The aim of the research will be to develop a model of the blood-brain barrier enabling real-time measurement of changes in its permeability as a result of the application of electrical impulses (using an electric field to change the integrity of the blood-brain barrier).

This work will include:

  • development of a microsystem design for testing the assisted transport of compounds across the blood-brain barrier;
  • selection of materials and methods of microsystem fabrication;
  • selection of electroporation parameters carried out in a microsystem based on the blood-brain barrier model;
  • development of methods for visualization and quantitative analysis of compound transport;
  • study of the transport of selected compounds used in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
