There is a vacancy for a 100% temporary position as Scientific Project Manager at the Geophysical Institute . The position is for the period March-October 2023 The position is associated with the project EU H2020 COMFORT.

The main task for this position is to act as Project Manager for the COMFORT project “Our common future ocean in the Earth system quantifying coupled cycles of carbon, oxygen, and nutrients for determining and achieving safe operating spaces with respect to tipping points,” which is a central European research project aiming to provide added value to decision and policy makers in terms of science-based safe marine operating spaces, refined climate mitigation targets, and feasible long-term mitigation pathways. The project has 32 partners from Europe, Africa, Canada, and India.



About the project/work tasks:

The candidate will assist the project director of COMFORT on all matters concerning the scientific management of the project (the financial management will be dealt with by respective other consultants). The tasks include:

  • Compiling the final report to the European Commission.
  • Executing the internal and external communication (especially through the project’s website)
  • Following-up the project activities, in particular, ensuring that all deliverables as well as milestones are provided in time.
  • Carry out continuous reporting on the EU portal.
  • Organisation of project meetings and workshops.
  • Networking with other international and national projects as well as agencies in the field.
  • Contributing to the project achieving the greatest possible impact internationally and nationally.
  • Following-up ethical requirements and the obligation to publish in open access mode.
  • Support for preparing synthesis publications.
  • Support for making data sets publicly available.


Qualifications and personal qualities:

Key requirements:

  • Applicants must have achieved a Norwegian Master’s degree within oceanography, meteorology, physics, mathematics, biology, geology, or related fields, or must have achieved equivalent education abroad
  • In-depth familiarity with the process of scientific research in the climate and ocean sciences. Good communication skills with various stakeholders and across disciplines.
  • A high level of writing skills and in particular the ability to formulate easy to understand texts for dissemination to (a) experts and (b) nonexperts.
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English.
  • Excellent team working skills (with respect to e.g. diplomacy, patience, problem solving)
  • Ability to approach and organise complex tasks in a structured manner.

Highly desirable are further:

  • Previous experience in management of large scientific projects.
  • Scientific competence in ocean and climate science, in particular in marine biogeochemical cycles. Experience in scientific publishing with special emphasis on open access publishing.
  • Experience in programming/maintenance of websites (wordpress). Experience with the EU participant portal.
  • Travelling must be expected
  • Awareness of environmentally friendly management procedures and reductions of the carbon footprint.
