About the position:

At University of Bergen Library (UBL) Section for education and research support, team Digital development, there is a vacancy for a permanent 100 % position as a research engineer (head engineer 1087 or senior engineer 1181).

The position is dedicated to the Center for Digital Narrative (CDN), a Norwegian center for research excellence at the Humanities Faculty.

The Center focuses on algorithmic narrativity, interactive environments, materialities, and shifting cultural contexts in which digital narratives are received and processed. We investigate the ways that the interactions of human authors and non-human agents renew narrative forms, how digital narratives have changed over time, and how textual materialities and cultural contexts are now reshaping the use and function of digital narrative. Information about CDN here .

The Center for Digital Narrative is a dynamic research environment housed in the heart of the University of Bergen campus. The activities of the Center include research group meetings, interactions with international research leaders in digital narrative, researcher training, PhD summer schools, frequent symposia, workshops, and exhibitions. 

  • Main role: database architect and developer, who will work with us as we adapt an existing research database to a new format with new functionalities.
  • Secondary role: working with CDN team on technical aspects of other research projects, including Digital Humanities projects and creative works in digital media.
  • Secondary role: troubleshooting and supporting other technical research infrastructure within the Center.


Duties:
  • Database architecture, development and maintenance, including user interface.
  • Staying up to date on and advising researchers on emerging digital narrative technologies.
  • Technical research support.
  • Leading practical development workshops on software and applications for researchers.
  • Advising CDN researchers on project development, including for example technical aspects of grant proposals.
  • Liaison between the Center, University of Bergen Library, and Information Technology department.
  • Participating in other relevant activities linked to digital development.


Qualifications and personal attributes:

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as information science, computer science, digital humanities or other related field. To be a head engineer, you must have bachelor's degree within the relevant subject area, for senior engineer you must have master's degree within the relevant subject area. Equivalent qualifications obtained through relevant practical experience combined with relevant continuing education can compensate for a lack of formal education. 
  • Competence and practical experience with database development.
  • The candidate will be required to work with SQL and Drupal.
  • Competency within one or more of these: JavaScript, PHP, Java, Python, R, Git, Kubernetes, C#.
  • Experience working in a research environment is desirable.
  • Good oral and written communication skills in Norwegian (or another Scandinavian language) or English. Since Norwegian is the administrative language at UiB, it is a prerequisite that foreign language applicants acquire this knowledge.

Personal attributes:

  • Interest in working with novel and emerging technologies such as VR, AI, and physical computing.
  • Interest in learning about new platforms and innovative applications.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team that includes people with many different backgrounds and skillsets.
  • Ability to deliver on schedule in a structured, user-oriented and organized way.
