Research assistant - 20 percent position at the REVISION project 

 There is a vacancy for a 20 percent position as a research assistant at the project “Re-assessing St. Birgitta and her Revelations in Medieval England: Circulation and Influence, 1380-1530" (ReVISION), led by Professor Laura Saetveit Miles. The regular workplace will be at the Department of Foreign Languages, University of Bergen, Norway. The position is for a fixed-term period of 1 year but with the possibility of extension, and by plan starting as soon as possible. 

The Department has around 60 permanent academic staff members, along with around 20 PhD and postdoc candidates, eleven administrative members of staff, in addition to colleagues in temporary positions.  The Department of Foreign Languages spans nine different languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, German, Spanish and Latin American studies. Teaching and research are conducted in the disciplines of language/linguistics, literature, history/cultural studies and didactics. 

This project aims to uncover the full impact of the Swedish saint Birgitta on late-medieval English literature and culture. To this end, the project team is developing a website, database, network graphs, and textual editions, as well as publishing analytical research. A workshop, a final conference, and possibly several smaller seminars are some of the planned activities. The project is associated with the UiB Literature and Religion Research Group. The project assistant will be expected to work closely with the other members of the project team, including a researcher and guest researcher. 



Tasks 

The research assistant will, among other things, follow up these tasks:  

  • Assist the project leader with gathering and organization of primary and secondary sources. 
  • Develop the project’s Zotero library. 
  • Assist the post-doc and associated researchers with the editing work package part of the project. 
  • Help to plan project events such as workshops. 
  • Contribute to the project’s website, online dissemination, and digital resources (including Omeka S and graphing software). 
  • Assist with administrative tasks for the Birgitta project as well as the Literature & Religion Research Group. 


Qualifications
  • Fluent English, spoken and written.  
  • Articulate in person and in writing and with a professional demeanor. 
  • Organized, reliable, and resourceful. 
  • Highly proficient computer and word processing skills.  
  • Experience with citation management software desired (especially Zotero). 
  • Experience with the UiB web platform desired. 
  • Norwegian language desired, but not required. 

Applicants who already have held a PhD position or obtained qualifications equivalent to a PhD degree are not eligible for the position.  

The position as research assistant demands that the successful applicant has his or her regular workplace at the Department of Foreign Languages, University of Bergen, Norway. Applicants who want exception from this must negotiate this with the Department.

The successful applicant is expected to comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at all times.

  • Candidates with a BA will be paid according to pay grade 42 (code 1019), in the State Salary Scale, currently approx. NOK 448 500,- gross p.a in a full position before taxes. Candidates with a MA will be paid according to pay grade 51 (code 1020), in the State Salary Scale, currently approx. NOK 508 900,- gross p.a in a full position and before taxes. A higher salary may be considered for particularly well-qualified applicants.  
  • Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
