About the position

The Industrial Ecology Program (IndEcol ), Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is seeking a research assistant in the project “Resource Efficiency and Climate Change ”, where the objective is assessing the contribution of material efficiency strategies in buildings, transport infrastructure and vehicles for mitigation of climate change and biodiversity loss. The primary task of the research assistant is to support data collection, modeling, and analysis/presentation of results. In addition, the candidate would support the project leader in coordination tasks. The modeling makes use of engineering tools such as EnergyPlus, life cycle assessment, and dynamic material flow analysis through the ODYM-RECC model . We are looking for a recent graduate in industrial ecology, physics, mathematics, engineering, or applied economics/statistics who has skills in programming, data processing, and/or engineering analysis.

Duration of the position is 18 months.

You will report to Professor Edgar Hertwich .


Duties of the position
  • Data collection and model development, including programming in python or MatLab
  • Modelling, analysis of results, and documentation
  • Drafting of scientific reports and articles
  • Assisting in project coordination

Required selection criteria

The position as Research Assistant should give you the opportunity to gain insight into scientific or artistic work and method. The assignments are at an academic level and must consist of scientific or artistic assistance.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

  • Completed master's degree
  • Strong analytical capabilities
  • Competence in life cycle assessment and/or material flow analysis og strong programming skills (e.g., Python, GAMS, R, MatLab, GIS or similar)
  • Evidence of an interest in the research, articulated in a cover letter or research proposal
  • Good written and oral English language skills

Preferred selection criteria
  • It is considered a strength of the candidate also speaks a Scandinavian language
  • It is considered a strength if the candidate has prior knowledge of industrial ecology, civil, energy or materials engineering, economics, or operations research
  • Good written and oral English language skills

Salary and conditions

Research assistants are remunerated in code 1020 depending on competence, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 407 500 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority.

Duration of the position is 18 months.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
