About the position

At Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, there is a vacancy for a Professor or Associate Professor in Construction Technology and Management. The position is related to technology, planning, organization and management of large construction projects such as roads, railways, and tunnels. The position shall contribute to the department’s joint effort to the green shift in built environment through digitalization.

The position is part of the research group Building process, where teaching and research within technology, planning, organization and management of large construction projects is crucial. Currently the research group is doing research on different aspects of front-end management, design management, construction management and facility management. The research group is responsible for the Department’s BIM Laboratory.

You will do research and teaching within construction engineering and production management, e.g. planning and construction of tunnels, rock caverns, earth moving, and similar large construction works. The research and teaching shall focus on sustainability and digitalisation to contribute to develop new knowledge required for emission-free and waste-free construction technology and management.

The strategy of the department has a focus on how our research and education contribute to the green shift in the built environment.

You will report to the Head of Department.


Duties of the position
  • Teaching include life-long learning activities and research within the field of Construction technology and Management.
  • Important topics of the research area are planning, design and construction management of tunnels, underground caverns, and surface rock excavations, including excavation methods, equipment, capacity and cost models, quality, HES,
  • Research with a focus on emission free, waste free and resource efficient construction technology for large infrastructure projects
  • Digitalization such as BIM and automatization in Construction technology and Management are focused areas.
  • Adapting Construction technology to the Green Shift.
  • General focus on design and optimization of construction works regarding technical, economic and environmental performance.
  • Use of experimental investigations in the laboratory and in the field has high priority.
  • Cooperation with other research groups in construction engineering, as well as the Norwegian construction industry, in order to develop new methods and applications of construction engineering.

Required selection criteria

Professor:

The position of Professor within Construction Engineering and Management requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-2. 

  • your academic work must be essentially within Construction Engineering and Management or equivalent subject area  
  • You have performed research of relevance for tunnelling and underground space
  • You have performed research of relevance for rock engineering
  • You have performed research in cooperation with the relevant industry
  • You have work experience from relevant industry or public services

In addition to formal qualifications in teaching at university level, you must document

  • Development in teaching and counselling of students over time
  • Extensive experience with supervision preferably at the master / PhD level
  • Participation in the development of educational quality in a work environment

Associate Professor:

The position of Associate Professor within Construction Engineering and Management requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4. 

  • Your PhD, or academic work of the same scope and quality, must be within Construction Engineering and Management or equivalent  
  • You have performed research of relevance for tunnelling and underground space
  • You have performed research of relevance for rock engineering
  • You have performed research in cooperation with the relevant industry
  • You have work experience from relevant industry or public services

Common:

You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations . If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

  • Good written and oral English language skills

Preferred selection criteria
  • Applicants with teaching experience from higher education will be preferred 
  • Applicants with research or experience from digitalization and/or use of BIM in Construction Engineering and Management will be preferred
  • Applicants with research or experience of relevance for Construction Engineering and the Green Shift will be preferred
  • Good written and oral knowledge in at least one Scandinavian language

We offer 
Salary and conditions

In a position as Professor (code 1013) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 620 000 to NOK 980 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. In a position as Associate Professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 550 000 to NOK 770 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
