Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within acoustic seismology

At the Department of Earth Science , University of Bergen, there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within acoustic seismology.

The position is for a fixed term of 4 years and is associated with the EU-funded project High Arctic Ocean Observation System (HiAOOS). The desired start date is as soon as possible, and the latest possible start date is 1. December 2023.



About the project/work tasks:

HiAOOS aims to develop, implement, and validate several ocean observing technologies in the ice-covered Arctic Ocean. The Department of Earth Science will be responsible for collecting continuous acoustic data and develop methods and tools for detecting, locating and analysing earthquakes and other geohazard events from the data. The main tasks of the postdoctoral research fellow will include:

  • Develop methods and tools for joint analysis of acoustic and seismological data to detect, locate and analyse earthquakes and other geohazard events.
  • Apply the developed methods and tools to study earthquakes in the Arctic region.
  • Document and publish the developed tools through an online platform.
  • Develop training materials on the developed methods and tools and contribute to arranging training events.
  • Some travel in connection with project meetings and possibly offshore fieldwork is to be expected.


Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within earthquake, seismology, ocean acoustics, geophysics or a related field. PhD-students may apply if defence of the PhD-thesis is completed by 01.06.2023. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • Experience from analysis of earthquake data and/or ocean acoustic data is a requirement.
  • Experience with earthquake seismology in the Arctic is an advantage.
  • Knowledge related to instrumentation, field work and/or programming is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position 

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.



About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The postdoctoral position is a fixed term position with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.


For externally financed positions: For postdoctoral research fellow positions associated with externally financed projects, the completion of the project proposal for the qualifying work, as well as a progress plan, will be developed in cooperation with the supervisor and head of department.

It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.

  • Position as postdoctoral fellow (code 1352 in the basic collective agreement) and a gross annual salary of NOK 573 900 (equivalent to pay grade 62) upon appointment. Further increases in salary are made according to length of service in the position. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well-qualified applicant.
  • Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
