Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position at the Department of Government . The position is for a fixed-term period of 4 years, of which 25% will be dedicated to teaching, supervision, and dissemination at the Department.

The position is announced as part of the Nansen-initiative of the University of Bergen , which aims to strengthen the University of Bergen's research and teaching on the high north/Arctic region. We welcome applicants with a focus on issues of governance in the high north/Arctic region, related to complex societal challenges and multilevel issues, e.g., climate change and societal security, and based on approaches relevant to the scientific profile of the department.

The Department covers political science, studies of public policy, public administration, democracy and participation, and an organizational approach to political institutions. Research at the department is organized in research groups. Applicants are advised to consult and make themselves familiar with the teaching and research profile of the department.


Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • The applicant must hold (or be close to submission and defense of) a PhD within political science, public administration, or the equivalent, with relevance for the Department’s profile. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • Experience in teaching and supervision will be emphasized. Completed formal pedagogical training will also be assessed positively.
  • As an applicant you should be able to work independently, have a considerable work capacity as well as an enthusiasm for research, and have good collaborative qualities.
  • Be proficient in English, both oral and written.
  • Personal aptitude will be important for the position.

The teaching language is usually Norwegian, but some of the teaching is given in English.


About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The fixed-term period for this position is 4 years. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

A research proposal of 4-5 pages must accompany the application. The proposal should present the topic, the research problem(s) and choice of theory and methods. The proposal should contain a progress plan for the different parts of the research work, as well as a plan regarding publishing. It is a requirement that the project is completed during the period of employment. A budget must be set up for operating expenses.


The candidate is expected to collaborate with relevant staff and research groups across the Social Science Faculty that are also focusing on the high North/Arctic, e.g., the Department of Comparative Politics, the Centre for Climate and Energy Transformation (CET), and to contribute to teaching within this area when relevant. The postdoctoral fellow will thus be exposed and contribute to both disciplinary and cross-disciplinary research regarding the high north/Arctic region, related to complex societal challenges and issues of governance of e.g., climate change and societal security.

The successful candidate is expected to live and work in Bergen during the project period and participate in common activities at the Department.

  • A postdoctoral research plan/project proposal of 4-5 pages.

  • Transcripts and diplomas and official confirmation that the doctoral thesis has been submitted.
  • Relevant certificates/references.
  • A list of academic publications.
  • Up to five publications in full text including statements of author contributions to these publications. It is important that the publications that the committee are to assess are attached to the application in full.
