Do you want to research sea ice modelling?

We have an open position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow in sea ice modelling. The position is part of our well-established research activities on physical and biogeochemical processes in the Arctic and Southern Oceans. It is funded by the Norwegian Research Council project “Bottom-sea ice Respiration and nutrient Exchanges Assessed for THE Arctic (BREATHE)“. For more information visit: https://www.breathearctic.com/home.

This is a fixed-term position for two years. You will be employed in Section for Marine Ecology in our Research Department. Your workplace will be Tromsø, Norway. Some travels may be expected due to visits and collaboration with both national and international project partners.

Work content

You will work with coupled sea ice physical and biogeochemical models with focus on exchange processes at the sea ice-ocean interface and on sea ice biogeochemical processes. You will specifically:

  • contribute to improve the representation of exchange processes at the sea ice-ocean interface, integrating published data and methods and, new observational data collected during the project
  • contribute to improved parameterizations of sea ice biogeochemical processes such as but not limited to nutrients uptake, ice algal photosynthesis and respiration and, bacterial respiration
  • carry out model testing and evaluation against observations
  • write and publish peer-reviewed scientific articles presenting your results

Qualifications

You must hold a completed PhD in Marine sciences or other related field such as Physical Oceanography or Marine Biology/Ecology.

A Norwegian doctoral degree or equivalent doctoral degree from a foreign university is required. You are welcome to apply if you have not completed your doctoral dissertation yet, but you must then provide documentation that your dissertation has been submitted for evaluation before the application deadline for the position. An approved public defence of your doctoral thesis is a prerequisite for employment.

In addition to your PhD we would like you to have:

  • experience with sea ice or ocean numerical model systems – ideally, experience with the Los Alamos Sea Ice Model (CICE)
  • programming skills in FORTRAN
  • experience with super-computers and with the Linux environment
  • good MATLAB skills
  • a good understanding of marine biogeochemical cycles

Remember to include an updated publication list. We will emphasize your publication record and what journals they are published in. It is in your favour if you already have connections within international research networks.

You will collaborate with colleagues at the Norwegian Polar Institute and collaborators within the BREATHE-project, so good collaborative skills are necessary. You will, of course, also work individually. This implies that you need to determine what type of work that needs to be done and to conduct it in the best possible way.

In addition to communicating, you are expected to deliver reports, publications etc., and thus, your written and oral communication must be good in English. Our working language is Norwegian, so knowledge of the Norwegian language will carry weight in the assessment. If you do not speak Norwegian you are expected to attend language courses during your employment since communicating in Norwegian will be important for you, as well as for the institute. We pay for courses that are completed successfully.

We can offer
  • interesting and exciting work tasks in an international environment.
  • salary according to the Norwegian State salary code 1352 postdoctoral research fellow. From this, 2% is deducted to the State Pension Fund.
  • Membership of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. The membership includes many benefits, such as lifetime retirement pension, the right to financial support if you become ill or disabled, financial support for our family if something happens to you in our service, insurance against occupational injury/illness, as well as good mortgage terms.
  • Membership in our staff association, which among other things has its own cabin and facilitates various social gatherings.

A diverse work force is important to us. If you are qualified for the position, you are welcome to apply regardless of your gender, age, cultural background, disabilities, or gaps in your CV. The latter two may be used for registration purposes in connection with the government’s policies.
