No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo.

Applicants are invited for a 2-year position as a Postdoctoral Follow in Petrology at the Njord Centre  with a starting date before the 1st September 2022. The position is funded by the European Research Council through the project Break-Through Rocks  . The project is hosted at the Njord Centre and involves collaborations with the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility where internships will be organized.

The Njord Centre is a cross-disciplinary geoscience-physics centre at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UiO. The Centre aims to be a main cross-disciplinary driver for the future development of Physical Sciences in general, with a focus on a fundamental understanding of the dynamics of fluid-solid systems with Earth-like complexity.

The appointment is a 2-year full-time position focused on the development and application of experimental techniques and image analysis methods to study the problem of residual strain in deformed rocks. The main goal of the position is to enable direct measurements of the residual strain in rock samples deformed naturally or in experiments. The applicant will be responsible for implementing techniques that involve synchrotron 3D X-ray diffraction, high-resolution EBDS, and Raman spectroscopy, and will develop a collaboration with the European Synchrotron in Grenoble, France.


The candidate will also perform field work to collect samples. Then, these measurements of residual strain will be interpreted in terms of fossil stress recorded by the samples. The candidate will develop image and data analysis routines to process the natural and experimental samples and will actively contribute to model development from these data. These developments will leverage the expertise of the University of Oslo in measuring fossil stress recorded in deformed rocks. The applicant is also expected to engage in outreach activity connected to the research activity at the Njord Centre.

The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period


Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in Earth Science, with a strong component in petrology. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and public defence are eligible for appointment.

The following qualifications will count in the assessment of the applicants:

  • Documented knowledge of programming languages for data analysis such as Python or R is required.
  • Knowledge of petrological modelling tools such as PerpleX, Theriak-Domino or Thermocalc is required.
  • Experience in petrography and analysis of rocks (SEM, EPMA, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy) is required.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English is required.
  • Knowledge in crystallography and diffraction techniques applied to minerals (EBSD, X-ray Powder Diffraction, sigle crystal XRD) is highly desired.
  • Experience with image analysis techniques is highly desired.
  • Field work competences to map and sample rocks in mid- to lower-crustal environments is highly desired.
