Postdoctoral Research Fellow in machine learning and data science (ref 232888)

The postdoctoral position is attached to the Section of Statistics and Data Science at the Department of Mathematics, University of Oslo (UiO). This section consists of 8 full time academic positions, 9 adjunct positions and many PhD-students and post doc’s making up a group of more than 30. Statistics at UiO is internationally recognized, with interests spanning a broad range of areas (including machine learning, high-dimensional and big data, nonparametric inference, algorithmic methods / machine learning, Bayesian inference, statistical computing, model selection, time-to-event models, space time models and copula models).

The main focus of this position will be development and use of machine learning techniques towards specific applications, where modelling and prediction of rare events within large, complex and multisource datasets will be central.

The postdoctoral position is partly connected to the PharmaTox Strategic Research Initiative at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo (www.mn.uio.no/farmasi/english/research/groups/pharmatox/ ). PharmaTox is a multidisciplinary center comprising strong research environments in pharmaceutical biosciences, biology, bioinformatics and statistics. The postdoctoral research fellow will spend part of the time at the Department of Pharmacy. A main topic will be to apply ML methods within a causal inference framework to assess the safety of medications and COVID-19 vaccines for specific groups such as children and pregnant women.

The postdoctoral position is also partly connected to BigInsight (biginsight.no ), a center for research-based innovation, funded by the Research Council of Norway. BigInsight produces innovative solutions for key data-driven challenges facing a consortium of private, public and research partners, by developing original statistical and machine learning methodologies. A particular topic of interest will be in fault detection in sensor data and fraud detection in insurance and finance data.
