The position

A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available at the Department of Social Science (ISV), Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education (HSL) with the research group Governance and democracy . This group has had a longstanding interest in governance in the Arctic and conditions for democracy. It is an including research group with members that are focusing on issues like territorial politics, natural resource policies, planning processes, digitalization of services and indigenous rights.

The position is a fixed term position for a duration of 3 years. Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant can carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

The position can additionally be assigned to teaching and related work for UiT in an amount equivalent to a maximum 25 % of a full-time employment.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. Physical presence in Tromsø is required throughout the employment period. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.


The position's field of research

The complicated mixture of environmental, political and regime structures of the High North are affecting Norwegian local, regional and international interests. The rapidly changing dynamics of the High North present a timely opportunity for new scientific research on Arctic governance and conditions for democratic institution building.

UiT’s Political science research group on Governance invites applications for an available postdoctoral fellowship in Arctic governance for a PhD candidate in political science. Possible research areas include the evolving role of interest group engagement with formal institutions in the management of the Arctic; the management of the coastal zone and/or marine areas; the shape and future of the Arctic Commons; the regulation of fisheries and fish farming; changing population patterns; domestic and international territorial conflicts; challenges involving indigenous peoples; green adaptability in vulnerable areas; and digitalization of services. Other related approaches to Arctic governance are also welcome.The focus of the post doc project can be adapted and further developed in line with the candidate's interests as long as the empirical basis relates to Arctic governance and conditions for democratic institution building.

The postdoctoral position welcomes and facilitates collaboration on Arctic policy with researchers, businesses, authorities and civil society. In addition to do own research, the Postdoctoral Research Fellow is expected to strengthen work with an EU-application within this field of research. It is expected that the successful candidate collaborates with colleagues in such an EU-application process, and the Postdoctoral Research Fellow takes a main responsibility in the application process.

Applicants must submit a project description that is no longer than 2,000 words. The application must also reflect on how to strengthen the work with an EU application. Future research ideas in extension of the postdoctoral position must be included. It is a requirement that the postdoctoral project is completed within the employment period.

Qualifications

This position requires a Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) or an equivalent foreign doctoral degree in political science or another relevant social science.

Qualification with a PhD is required before commencement in the position. If you’re at the final stages of your PhD, you may still apply if you have submitted your PhD thesis for doctoral degree evaluation within the application deadline. You must submit the thesis with your application. You must have dissertated before the start-up date of the position.

Fluency in English is required and working knowledge of Norwegian or a Scandinavian language is desirable.

Experience with writing application for EU projects is desirable.

In the assessment the main emphasis will be attached to the submitted works and the project proposal for the qualifying work. Emphasis shall also be attached to experience from popularization/dissemination and academic policy and administrative activity.

During the assessment emphasis will be put on the candidate’s motivation, potential for research, and personal suitability for the position. We are looking for candidates who:

Assessment

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications based on the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailed description draw up for the position.

The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview should among other things, aim to clarify the applicant’s motivation and personal suitability for the position. A trial lecture may also be held.

The remuneration for Postdoctoral research fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1352. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.

The successful candidate must be willing to get involved in the ongoing development of their department and the university as a whole.
