Would you like to research seabirds?

We have a vacant postdoctoral position in seabird ecology with a focus on winter ecology and the connection between winter distribution and population dynamics. The position is linked to the SEATRACK project, which is funded by the Ministry of Climate and Environment, the Ministry of Oil and Energy, the Norwegian Coastal Administration and Offshore Norway, as well as 12 energy companies. The project is led by the Norwegian Polar Institute (NP) in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute for Natural Research (NINA) and partners in 11 countries. Its aim is to map the winter distribution of selected seabird species in the North Atlantic and understand how changes in environmental conditions affect demography and population trajectories. For more information, see: https://seapop.no/en/seatrack/ .

This is a fixed termed position for four years in our section for terrestrial ecology and seabirds at NPI’s research department. The section carries out monitoring and research within the fields of terrestrial ecology and seabird ecology, with a focus on how changes in climate, environmental conditions and human activity affect plant, animal and bird populations in the Arctic and Antarctic.

Your workplace will be Tromsø, Norway. Some travels may be expected to meetings/workshops and participation in fieldwork.

Work assignments

You will be part of a team of researchers and mainly work with:

  • descriptions of migration routes and wintering areas of seabirds, and how environmental conditions affect the use of these between years
  • the effects of variation in winter distribution and environmental conditions on demography and population development
  • development of scenarios predicting how the distribution of seabirds will change as a result of climate change and subsequent changes in the distribution of prey animals, as well as the vulnerability of seabirds to human activity
  • documentation of important areas for seabirds at sea and connections to other ecosystem components (e.g. prey)

We want you to focus your work on large-scale studies across species and localities.

The project is based on the use of GLS loggers to map seabird movements outside the breeding season. You will work closely with other Norwegian and foreign researchers participating in the project.

Qualifications

You must hold a PhD in ecology or marine biology. A Norwegian doctorate or an equivalent doctorate degree from a foreign university is required. If you have not yet completed your dissertation, you are still welcome to apply, but then you must document that your doctoral work has been submitted for assessment before the application deadline for the position. An approved public defense of your doctoral thesis is a prerequisite for employment.

In addition to your PhD, experience with spatial analyses, use of GIS tools and R, as well as statistics (e.g. mixed models) is required. Experience in seabird ecology, with fieldwork in polar regions and a good publication list (for your career level) will be considered as assets.

Applicants should have good collaboration skills, but also be able to work in a structured and independent manner. Good oral and written knowledge of English is required. Our working language is Norwegian, so knowledge of Norwegian will carry weight in the assessment. If you do not speak Norwegian, you are expected to complete a Norwegian course during the first two years of your employment since communication in Norwegian will be important for both you and the institute. We organize and pay for courses that are completed successfully.

Passing a health check in accordance with the institute's guidelines is a prerequisite for participation in fieldwork.

We offer

The position as postdoctoral research fellow is defined as a recruitment position, and the main objective of such positions is to qualify for work in senior academic positions. Postdoctoral research fellow positions are primarily intended for researchers who are the beginning of their careers. No one may be appointed to more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution in Norway.
