About the position

Applicants are invited for a two-year position as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Electric Power Engineering, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway. The candidate will be part of the Power System Operation and Analysis (PSOA) research group.

The position is part of the research project “Key technologies and demonstration of combined cooling, heating and power generation for low-carbon neighbourhoods/buildings with clean energy – ChiNoZEN” jointly funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) in China and the Research Council of Norway (RCN). This announcement relates to position funded by RCN and will be hired by NTNU.

The Norwegian part of the project is linked to the four Research Centres on Environment-friendly Energy (FME Centres): FME ZEN , FME SuSolTech , FME HighEFF  and FME Cineldi . The centres are funded for the period 2017 – 2024 each with a total budget of approximately 35 mill. Euros, and a significant number of PhD/Post.Docs are connected to each centre. The Chinese consortium comprises prominent universities and industry partners: Beijing Jiaotong University, China Academy of Building Research, Gree Electric Appliances, Inc. of Zhuhai, Solareast Holdings Co. Ltd., Lanzhou University of Technology, North China Electric Power University (NCEPU), Qingdao Somir Energy Science and Technology Co. Ltd., Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tsinghua University, Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology.

The ChiNoZEN project supports the transition to a reliable, affordable, publicly accepted, sustainable built environment, aiming at reducing fossil fuel dependency in the face of increasingly scarce resources, growing energy needs, and threatening climate change. The project delivers new knowledge, solutions and innovative technologies for low-carbon buildings and neighbourhoods.

This Postdoctoral position will have its focus in the joint activities of the research centres FME Cineldi and FME ZEN. FME Cineldi has as a major objective to secure an intelligent and flexible distribution system by optimal utilization of the existing grid infrastructure. FME ZEN looks at the energy flexibility potential from the building and neighbourhood side. This position will connect these activities in FME Cineldi and FME ZEN. The main focus of this position is to carry out theoretical modelling of key modules and process units such as solar energy systems, energy storage technologies, heat pumps and refrigeration systems, and develop an integrated optimization and dynamic performance simulation platform for utilizing clean energy in large-scale public buildings and small-scale neighbourhoods. The goal is to develop novel control strategies for combined cooling, heating and power generation (CCHP) system that meets the needs of low-carbon neighbourhoods to fully enable the use of renewable energy.

The supervision team will be Prof. Olav B. Fosso  (Main) ,Trygve Eikevik , Vojislav Novakovic .

Duties of the position

The duties of the position include the following items:

  • During the employment period, the candidate will work together with the international project consortium, and therefore good interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a complex, international project team is expected
  • Develop models both within the domain areas of FME ZEN and FME Cineldi which can be used in simulation and optimization tools. The major challenge is to find simplified models in a joint simulation still sufficiently accurate to capture domain specific needs.
  • Develop a framework for optimization and simulation of systems with combined heat and power including the distribution grid models where the time resolution, time horizon, boundary conditions and trade-off between conflicting objectives are essential quantities
  • Develop novel control strategies for combined cooling, heating and power generation (CCHP) systems which meet the needs of low-carbon neighbourhoods to fully enable the use of renewable energy
  • The postdoctoral fellow will stay minimum six months with one of the partners in China.
  • The results of the project are expected to be published in scientific journals and conferences and presented to research partners and user partners in the ChiNoZEN consortium.
  • The candidate may be involved in teaching duties, and supervision of Master and PhD students upon mutual agreement if required.

Required selection criteria

A postdoctoral research fellowship is a qualification position in which the main objective is the qualification for work in academic positions.

  • The candidate must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree, or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree, in electrical engineering, energy engineering (or equivalent). Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and public defence are eligible for appointment.
  • Research or project experience in one or several of the following domains will be highly appreciated: mathematical modelling, CCHP, renewable energy sources, storage systems, electrical engineering and energy conversion systems will be appreciated..
  • Excellent programming skills
  • Academic results, publications, relevant specialisation, work or research experience, personal qualifications, and motivation and a desire to make an impact on critical societal problems will be considered when evaluating the applicant
  • Applicants must have excellent English language skills, written and spoken. Applicants from non-English speaking countries outside EU/EEA/Switzerland must provide preliminary documentation of English language proficiency, in terms of an approved test. The following tests can be used: TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:
    • TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
    • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)

Further assessment of both written and oral English language skills and the ability to communicate fluently will be conducted in the continued selection process and during any interviews for the shortlisted applicants.

Salary and conditions

The employment period is two years. The starting date is somewhat negotiable between September 2020 and January 2021. Due to the current uncertain situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, the starting date may be changed to adapt to decisions of the Norwegian Directorate of Health.

Postdoctoral candidates are placed in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 542 400 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is fully funded by the Research Council of Norway.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
