About the position

We have a vacancy for a postdoctoral fellow at The Department of Chemical Engineering, NTNU. The position is part of the FRIPRO project “Establishing next-generation pioneering models for interface mass transfer, breakup and coalescence in turbulent flow”, funded by the Norwegian Research Council.

The position is planned for two-years time at NTNU and one-year at TU Wien.

The postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions.

The project

In this project, we aim to further develop interface resolved simulations of turbulent dispersed flow to also include the interface mass transfer phenomenon. The current in-house code considers turbulent channel flow of fluid particles that can deform, breakup and coalescence (i.e., the fluid particle size is larger than the Kolmogorov scale). The dispersed phase is modelled using the phase field method. The project bases on a close collaboration between NTNU (Prof. J. Solsvik) and TU Wien (Prof. A. Soldati) and will develop from simulation framework found in work such as, e.g., Mangani et al. (2022), Phyical Review Fluids 7, 053601: Influence of density and viscosity on deformation, breakage, and coalescence of bubbles in turbulence.


Duties of the position
  • Extend an existing in-house code for multiphase dispersed flow to also consider interfacial mass transfer. The existing in-house code offers interface resolved simulations of dispersed fluid particles in a channel. The extension of the code will need model developments and implementation, simulations and examination of the code performance.
  • Implementation in the Fortran language
  • Perform research, both individually and part of a group, and publish the work in high-ranked journals and at international conferences
  • Take part in building the research group’s expertise
  • Take part in international collaboration and conduct one year abroad at TU Wien

Required selection criteria
  • You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD
  • You must have a professionally relevant background in Fluid Mechanics, Computational Physics, Applied mathematics, or similar.
  • Good knowledge of turbulence theory and interface resolved methods, preferably from the PhD degree
  • Experienced with Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS)
  • Good programming skills, preferably in the Fortran language
  • Good written and oral English language skills
  • Have a publication record reflecting high-quality work and relevant publications for the present project  
  • Expected that the candidate can do a one-year research stay abroad at TU Wien

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Ph.D Candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate.


Preferred selection criteria
  • Knowledge of high-performance computing (HPC)
  • Experienced with simulations of the channel flow, homogeneous isotropic turbulence, and/or homogeneous shear turbulence
  • Knowledge of particle laden flows, preferable interface resolved methods such as the phase field method and the volume of fluid method
  • Experienced with numerical methods
  • Knowledge of interface mass transfer

  • Organized in the research approach and accurate with the implementation, analyses, and presentation of the work
  • Good work moral

Salary and conditions

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 563 500 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The position is planned for two-years time at NTNU and one-year at TU Wien.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants , and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.  After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
