Offer Description
The position

The Department of Chemistry  seeks a motivated, enthusiastic and self-driven postdoctoral fellow to contribute to our research in organic radicals. The fellow will be associated with the research group of Assoc. Prof. Marius M. Haugland . The position is a fixed term position for a duration of 3 years, with a preferred start date of mid-August 2023. The start date is negotiable.

Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant can carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

The position will additionally be assigned to teaching and related work for UiT in an amount equivalent to a maximum 20% of a full-time employment.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.


The project/position’s field of research

The research will focus on the synthesis and characterization of new stable or persistent radicals based on organic and organic/main group scaffolds, as well as the evaluation of potential applications of such radicals. Applications of particular relevance include catalysis of synthetic organic transformations, use as observable probes in biological systems, and use as energy-storage materials. Development of new radical methodology for organic synthesis may also be a relevant area of research. Some travel to conduct experimental work in collaborating laboratories may be required.

Qualifications

The position requires a Norwegian doctoral degree in organic chemistry or a closely related field, or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree.

Other requirements are:

  • A solid and varied background in organic synthesis
  • Experience with Schlenk line techniques
  • Knowledge of stable organic radicals, organometallic/organo-main group chemistry, and/or electrochemistry
  • Experience with and a good working knowledge of standard purification and analytical methods, such as NMR, MS, HPLC or similar
  • Excellence in previous work and a good track record
  • Self-organization and independence
  • Ability to work collaboratively, within and beyond the research group
  • Excellent work ethic and commitment
  • A good command of English, both written and verbal. English language proficiency must be documented (see below). Interest in Norwegian language and culture is welcome

In the assessment the extent to which you satisfy the qualification requirements will be evaluated based on the documentation you submit with your application. In addition to these requirements, the assessment will also consider your teaching experience and qualifications, experience from popularization/dissemination, and academic policy and administrative activities.

  • A brief description of your past research projects, and their relevance to the advertised position
  • A summary of your academic production (track record), and your own contributions to your research outputs
  • Academic works (up to five). The PhD thesis is regarded as one work

  • Documentation of English language proficiency: EITHER a copy of your PhD thesis, if this has been written in English, OR a diploma and transcript of a completed university degree taught and examined in English, OR documentation that you otherwise satisfy the English language requirements for Norwegian university admission  (e.g. language test certificates).   • Contact details of three references, including your PhD supervisor

Qualification with a PhD is required before commencement in the position. If you’re at the final stages of your PhD, you may still apply if you have submitted your PhD thesis for doctoral degree evaluation within the application deadline. In this case, you must submit the thesis with your application. You must have successfully defended your thesis before the start-up date of the position.

Assessment

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications based on the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailed description draw up for the position.

The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview should among other things, aim to clarify the applicant’s motivation and personal suitability for the position. A trial lecture may also be held.
