Postdoctoral Fellow in Hydrogen Safety

The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a two-year position as Postdoctoral Fellow in Hydrogen Safety at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Safety, Economics and Planning. 

The objective of the position is to strengthen research, and to give researchers/scholars holding a doctoral degree the opportunity for further qualification toward top academic positions.

The position is funded by the Research Council of Norway.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be affiliated with the competence building project for the industry, alled “ Safe hydrogen fuel handling and use for efficient implementation 2” (SH2IFT-2).

The University of Bergen leads the research work in the workpackage that the Postdoctoral Fellow will be working on, and the position will collaborate closely with the personnel within the workpackage as well with the project in general. The Postdoctoral fellow will be involved in studies of strength of knowledge related to various methods and techniques of safety assessments of hydrogen systems. 

The qualifying project will be carried out at the University of Stavanger. It is assumed that the appointee will work full time on the project and that she/he will participate in the academic community.

Hydrogen is an important vector in the ongoing transition to renewable energy sources. Insufficient knowledge about critical safety aspects related to large scale rollout of hydrogen technologies constitutes a considerable bottleneck for industry, government, end users and the general public.

SH2IFT-2 aims to close critical knowledge gaps identified by stakeholders from industry and government through development and redevelopment of existing modelling tools, leak-, fire- and explosion experiments of various scale, but also research based input to guidelines for safe use of hydrogen. The post.doc-project is integrated in workpackage 3 – Risk assessment and strength of knowledge. This workpackage cooperates closely with the other workpackages and uses experimental set-ups, simulation activities and studies in the preparation of blind predictions of consequences assessments and risk assessments. The work is based on system descriptions and defined scenarios, which we develop together with the consortium (researchers and industry participants). The overall goal is to assess strength of knowledge in typical safety analyses for hydrogen systems assumed implemented in societies (e.g. transport or industrial facilities).

It is important that the candidate has foundational scientific knowledge of measurement tools for safety, such as risk analysis, system theoretical safety analyses, consequence analysis and performance analysis. It is paramount that the postdoctoral fellow will take part in the organization and follow up blind prediction studies, in which representatives from the research and user partners carry out assessments. These assessments will be predictions of experiments and risk analysis of hypothetical hydrogen systems. The analytical tools must be seen in conjunction with large scale implementation in society.

The final project description and progress plan are drawn up in consultation with the supervisor (s) during the first three months of the employment period. It is a prerequisite that you complete the project during the employment period.

You must have a ph.d. with a specialisation relevant for the project. In your application you must describe this relevance and what you expect to contribute with based on your qualifications.The ph.d. thesis must have been submitted for evaluation within the application deadline for the position and approved before accession.

The following will also be considered an advantage:

• Knowledge of foundational issues with risk, safety, consequence and performance analyses.
• Experience with hydrogen safety and its use as an energy carrier
• Experience with technical safety systems and the underlying design premises and analyses
• Analytical abilities regarding safety related issues
• Ability to critically reflect upon concepts and models applied in safety assessments

You must have good command of both oral and written English.
